This will be a watershed and answer more then a few questions about ELCO PTs that existing plans and photos can't seem to resolve!

Congratulations of this discovery/recovery to current media that will make this an enduring resource as long as there are PT enthusiasts...which always be, always!!

Just a quick note:

I,m not sure if I'm miss-reading some post and email sent to me or if the fact is misunderstood.

The six rolls of Microfilm have been around for a long time. It's not a new find. I've been aware of them for maybe a dozen years, I just hadn't saved up enough money to buy them. Al Ross, and maybe his father before him has had a set of these, including two other Early ELCO's 70' &77's rolls for some time now. It was a while back when Al gave me the heads-up on these other rolls. I haven't included them because I'm still saving money to buy the rolls and have them scanned. When I do, and if I'm real, real nice to my understanding wife, I'll get them and process then the same way.

After viewing the 3,500 frame I'm convinced that there are a lot of drawing not include on these rolls. With a project the size of the ELCO 80' there would be at least 10,000 drawings if not more. The level of detail was not complete nor were there Control Drawings for vendor purchased parts and equipment. Hopefully there are more rolls in the archive, but just not identified. Without Al's heads up, the Archives told me these six rolls were the only PT Boat (Motor Torpedo Boat) existing. - So much for government work.

I'm also sure that the Navy and Bureau of Ship also went to Higgins and Huckins plants and proceeded like they did after or before the ELCO microfilming visits. It just stand to reason. After all, when they bought the PT Boats, documentation (plans) must be supplied, SOP for decades.

If anyone has info on these items please share.

Boy, as usual this quick note turned into another mini novel, sorry.

Thanks,
Dick . . .

Hey there Dick.

Ever think of having a donation thing set up where those of us who would like to actively help preserve the history of these wonderful boats could contribute something to help you buy these micro-film rills?

Just an idea from Peter

"Give me a faster PT boat for I'd like to get out of harm's way!"

Regarding manufacturing instructions, if you ever make it to HQ be sure to check out their volumes on assembling PT 731. The complete set consists of 4 hard cover bound volumes, copiously illustrated with photos, each about 2 thick. Step-by-step instructions for assembling the 80' Elco kits shipped to Russia in KDF under lend-lease. But how many lifetimes do you have?

I have seen other ELCO plans in books but only the HQ plans are readily available in a decent resolution. And I had no clue that there existed so many others.

No longer will I get moody thinking about the wide variety available to the Higgins boys through the UNO website. You have done a wonderful service for ELCO fans Dick.

I did some searching at http://arcweb.archives.gov/ to see what I could find, lots of videos plus some printed matter. here's some of what they have listed:

14 linear feet, 11 linear inches

This series contains a wide variety of records created by the staff of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron One (MTBRon 1). This series encompasses the entire range of files that would be maintained by an operational Navy command. This series contains histories of both MTBRon 1 itself and its constituent boats. The histories contain no information about the first series of experimental boats that formed the squadron's initial complement. Although the squadron's second complement of boats consisted of PT boats 20-31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41-43, there are histories for only PT 20, PT 24, PT 27, PT 29, PT 30, and PT 42. The histories for even these boats are not complete. This series also contains a variety of standard reports ranging from personnel to material that inform higher command echelons of the squadron's status. This series includes a substantial number of correspondence files, both serialized and unserialized. Finally, the series also contains a range of inventories, equipage cards, requisitions, and invoices for the equipment that constituted a World War II motor torpedo boat squadron.

This series contains two files of photographs. One file contains photographs of various depth charge installations fitted to motor torpedo boats, while another file contains photographs of the weapons firing range at the Motor Torpedo Boat Training Center at Melville, Rhode Island.
**********************
Personal Papers, compiled 1928 - 1984
ARC Identifier 573207
Series from Collection DDE-1093: John D. Bulkeley Papers, 1928 - 1984

This series documents the naval career of John D. Bulkeley, particularly during World War II, when he was a PT boat commander. The series includes material on motor torpedo boats; the evacuation of General Douglas MacArthur and President Manuel Quezon from the Philippines by Bulkeley; PT boat operations during the Normandy invasion; Operation Dragon (Anvil); the book "They Were Expendable" by William Allen White and movie by the same title, which dramatized the exploits of Bulkeley's PT boat squadron; and the 40th anniversary of D-Day. This series contains correspondence, memorandums, news clippings, reports, school transcripts, action reports, orders, and awards.
**********************
Records Relating to Motor Torpedo Boat Design Competition, compiled 1938 - 1940
ARC Identifier 1174288 / MLR Number P 20
Series from Record Group 19: Records of the Bureau of Ships, 1940 - 1966

Architectural and Engineering Drawings
Photographs and other Graphic Materials
Textual Records

This series consists of correspondence, memorandums, technical notes, photographs, drawings, and other documentation relating to a design competition for new 54-foot and 70-foot motor torpedo boat (MTB or PT-Boat) designs which officially began on July 11, 1938 and closed on September 30, 1938. The competition also involved designs for 110-foot wooden hull and 165-foot steel hull submarine chasers, but most of the records in the series pertain to the motor torpedo boat competition, and a few documents pertain to 45-foot aircraft rescue boats.

Series from Record Group 313: Records of Naval Operating Forces, 1849 - 1997

Maps and Charts
Photographs and other Graphic Materials
Textual Records

This series consists of formerly classified general administrative diaries and communications files documenting activities of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons, Pacific Fleet (MTBRonsPac) and its predecessor organization, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons, South Pacific (MTBRonsSopac). These squadrons were active throughout the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Included in this series are squadron and ship files, action reports, histories, war diaries, general correspondence, departmental instructions, and incoming and outgoing message traffic (cables). This series also contains records regarding individual personnel, including crew muster rolls, personnel reports, and correspondence relating to personnel assignment and detail.
