I remember that show. It was called Gallant Men. Good show, just not as excepted as Cobat from us kids. I mean come on Sarge had the Tommy gun. Drew, so funny you mentioned those things. I can remember my mother telling me "No Combat" if your school homework is not done". And like you said it was checked by Mom, and god forbide if it was not done right. I loved watching Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights. I can remember the Beatles being on, and my father so discusted by what he called long haired beatnicks.

As with most households in the early days, we only had one TV, so sometimes Dad would watch those shows with us. He really liked Combat and Mchales Navy. Dad is gone now, but I can still hear him laughing when Captain Binghampton would go off on Parker. Good times, that I miss so much. Even thouh most of those old shows you can get on CD, it will never be the same, as eating your supper, taking a bath, laying out your clothes, doing the homework, then getting your snacks ready for those wonderful shows..........

Something to look for in a McHales Navy episode.I think someone was fooling around,but i remember seeing in one episode the map of the Pacific in Binghamptons office had Australia under New Zealand and to the right.I still remember it to this day,with that cast i bet if you look hard enough you will find lots of intentional bloopers.

Frank;
While I am a few years behind you, being born in 1963, I remember watching these shows on Re-runs while I grew up on Long Island. At that time McHales Navy was on everyday on WNEW Ch5 at either 9am or 10am. Afterwards I would usually switch channels to WCBS CH2 to watch Gomer Pyle. Since Dad was a Navy officer during world war ll, I guess I new more about the war than most kids my age. Even as a kid, I always wondered why they had the 73 boat, get transferred from the Pacific to the Mediterrainean, I later found out this never happened and the production crew just did it to expand the story line for another season. I also had other favorites that last until this day, like The Avengers, The Saint, ST, Branded, Have Gun Will Travel, The Wild Wild West, Hogans Heroes and Rat Patrol( I was lucky enough while deployed to Rota, Spain with NSWU-10 in 1999, I was fortunate to visit the area know as the Tabernas Desert of .Alemeria, Spain, where the first season of Rat Patrol was filmed, We also went on a MWR tour where the Clint Eastwood/Lee Van Cleef/Sergio Leone Spagetti westerns were filmed. The films were primarily shot in the Andalusia region of Spain, and the town built for the films is still there, Its a national landmark.
As you said, 256 channels now and all I watch is AMC, History channel Discovery, Military Channel and Speed.
Well take care,
TED

Ted

I always seem to get in trouble with the wife, who says I watch too many old shows. Here in my hometown we have a channel called TV LAND. On it I get to watch all the reruns of Hogans Heroes, Leave it to Beaver, Andy Grrffin Show, I love Lucy, Mash,Bonanza, and others. I would love to see them change the line up to include Mchales Navy, I Dream of Jennie, Gilligans Island, Dragnet, Wild Wild West,12'oclock High, Bronco Billy, and others. Funny, how we love to live in the past. I think those were the golden years of TV, and the last years of innocense. Everything now is mostly junk, but what can you do. By the way, my favorite actor of all time was JOHN WAYNE............

Does anyone know what type of boat was used in the filming of McHales' Navy?

The real PT 73 was a Higgens which was first assigned to Adak in the Aleutions before being reassigned to the South Pacific. Carpys' boat the 116 in real life was an 80' ELCO.

The boats in the show appear to be neither. Two forward torpedo tubes and four depth charges. It appears that these boats were considerably shorter than thise in real life.

I remember watching MCHALE'S NAVY, COMBAT, RAT PATROL and 12 O'CLOCK HIGH ..........

The boat used in the show was a Vosper built for the Soviets but never delivered ... either the 694 or the 695.

Originally, the show was supposed to be a drama, or so I'm told.

Frank, you are 100% right, we've got 8 gajillion billion channels and all we've got are stupid 'reality TV shows' and 7 trillion sports channels and 13 billion home-shopping channels or other language channels ....................

Frank, Garth, Mike, Drew, G R, Jeff;
I was reading a few months ago Borgnine's recent biography and he writes a great story how he almost did not take McHales Navy because he did not want to be type casted and wanted to get another big screen roll like Marty, he was also involved in a movie. Who convinced him to take the role??? Richard Boone, in a very unusual way!. When he was asked how he became involved with McHale Navy, here is what he writes in his book, "I was with MCA at the time, who produced the show. I had just come back from Italy, and they offered it to me, but I said, “I’m a motion picture actor now, I don’t do television anymore.” They said, “Well, if you change your mind, let us know, will you?”

The next morning came a knock on the door – a kid selling chocolate bars. He said, “Gee, you look awfully familiar, mister. What’s your name?” I told him I was James Arness, and he said, “Naw, he does ‘Gunsmoke,’ you’re not him.” So I told him, “No, my name is really Richard Boone,” and he said back, ‘No, he’s on ‘Have Gun Will Travel.’” So I told him my real name, and he looked at me – didn’t recognize me from Adam. I said, “Thanks a million kid. Here’s your money.” I put down the chocolate bars, and went over to the telephone and called my agent and said, “That part still open? I’ll do it.” He said, “What changed you mind? I said, “None of your damned business!”
The book is pretty funny, pick it up if you get a chance.
take care,
TED

Thats awesome Ted. Who would have thought a young child gave him the insight to grab the part. I still think the best role he ever played was in the Poisiden Adventure (just my opinion) He looked great, and played an awesome part as a cop married to that hot hooker. Speaking of that movie, who could ever forget those hot gals running around in their shorty shorts, and Bourgnine's wife in her shirt and panties. It was enough to send a young guy into a spin.

G R,

The other WW II show you may be thinking of was called The Gallent Men. Set in Italy, it was on ABC 1963-64-just one season. I love hearing about 1960s TV shows from all of the above. I can still remember times and channels of my favorite shows too. I also recall my Dad, a PT vet, didn't relly care for McHale's Navy but I bet he never watched more than a couple episodes...he was looking for a drama I guess.

I think the TV show GR mentioned was The Gallent Men which took place in Italy and ran on ABC for one season-1963-1964.
I love reading all the posts about 1960s TV shows. I can still remember the times and channels of my favorites too. My Dad, the PT man, didn't really care much for McHale's Navy as I recall but I don't remember him watching it either. Since you brought it up, I wonder if anyone noticed, or cares, that the show Spongebob Squarepants on Nickolodian has Borgnine and Conway on as superheros! Odd.
