Frank saw this photo in my Ron33 album and asked about the thing with the crank handle. Anybody know what it is? A siren perhaps?

BTW, the men in the photo are the skipper, Dick Brown and his exec, and future brother-in-law Nick.

I've wondered what that thing was since you first posted the photos of the 493...

It's the only one I've ever seen in pictures of PTs.

It looks like a pencil sharpener. Too small to be a siren.

Gary, that's a classic!

That's just where I'd put one on a PT, too -- outboard, on the port cockpit splinter shield!

Hi there.

I think it might be a small air raid siren. I found an image of another WW2 one that looks just like it.

Caption reads in part: Air Raid Siren, hand-cranked, used by U.S. military on Kodiak Island and Kiska

Cheers from PeterTareBuilder

It does look like the one attached to the PT Boat, and would be a useful tool to get the crews attention during GQ. Good call.......

I know, everytime I needed the wife, I could crank that thing up to get her attention. Problem is, after a while, I would look funny walking around with a crank handle sticking out of my A--.

That photo looks like it was taken at Battleship Cove. Was it?
