I just got back from spending a week at the National Archives in College Park Maryland which is outside the Washington DC area. I ran across this photo and thought you guys would like to see it.

Caption Reads: Gen MacArthur and Staff on PT as they cross from Negros Island to Iloilo, Panay Island, P.I., 1942

SC 262349

I don't know about the date, but it's kind of cool to see the general's flag flying from the mast.

Great photo, wrong date. PT 490 was with Ron 33, but wasn't even placed in service until December 1943. My guess would be sometime in 1945.

The original date was "7 June 1945". It was crossed off and replaced with 1942. Probably somebody at the National Archives didn't know what they were doing. I went through a few thousand photos that week and found that some of the captions didn't match up with the photos.

There appears to be some type of support for the man standing on the bow. I don't remember seeing any support of that type on any of the boats. We sometimes sat astride the bull nose instead of standing.

That is sure a bunch of well dressed sailors on the boat. I believe that we usually went without white caps, shirts and long pants. The general probably made a difference.

I've seen a photo somewhere of a support like that one. It seemed to be a pipe or rod the clamped to the barrel of the 37mm mounted on the bow.

Gidday all,
On the subject of the General.Id just like to know, how popular was General Macarthur with the servicemen, and public.I know here in Brisbane hes a bit of an icon, because he had his headquarters here at one time, and probably because hes one of the only high ranking brass that visited us in WW2.Here in Australia, the people only know of Macarthur, and Patton(only because of the movie) and Bradley(same as above)
I dont mean any disrespect, but im just interested to know how OUR American heros are thought of in their homeland.
I myself, think they must have been great men as only Great men come to the fore in times of peril?
Cheers Michael
