Hi there again.

I have been working some more on both my current build of the 1/32 scale Lindberg PT kit and also refurbishing my 20+ years old 1/32 scale Lindberg PT model.

I swapped out a gun tub from the old PT boat model to use on the current build so the tubs are the same size. However I needed to paint the white plastic one that was taken from the new kit and used on the old one.

Unfortunately I did not have any of the paint colour I used on the old PT model. I did have a can of Testors Model Master FS-34159 Sac Bomber Green. Would this approximate a very faded PT boat green?

For my new boat I was planning to use either Krylon Ultra-Flat Camouflage paint that looks to be an Army Olive Green (Sorry but there is no colour or colour number on the label) or Model Master FS-34079 Dark Green which is similar Are either of these two colours close to a South Pacific area Elco 80' PT boat cirva 1943?.

The only other colour I have on hand is Testors 1164 Flat Green. Would that be better?

The problem is that the hobby shop here in town is a real joke costumer service wise with unanswered phones and unanswered email inquiries which has resulted in me not dealing with them at all.

Mail Order is not an option.

Cheers from PeterTareBuilder

Hello Sir,

May I make a suggestion?

I would suggest that you go visit www.whiteensignmodels.com and check out their COLOURCOATS line of matched paints. They have all of the colors used on the USN PTs in WW2 including all of the Greens used by them. They do have free shipping to anywhere in the world.

Also, their Norfolk 65-A antifouling red is a good match for the Copperoyd bottom paint used on PTs.

Hope this helps you.

Garth

Hi there and thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately White Ensign's site is not any help to me as they do not have any samples (that I can find) showing what the colour actually is. All I see are tins like Humbrol but without any colour swatche.

How does one know what the colour in the tin looks like? The Url to the page I found the Colour Coat on is:

Hi again.

Sorry, but it appears that White Ensign also does not allow a link to take you directly to an item of interest. I just tried to Copy and Paste the link in my earlier reply and got the Catalogue instead of the paints.

Isn't there an easy way to see what the PT boat colours were?

Cheers from Peter

This may be a bit unorthodox but have you tried mixing your own colors. I believe it is blue and yellow that will give you green. Add black for a darker green. With a little work you may find the desired colors. We did this at times in painting the boats, Of course, we were not too particular of the results. We just wanted two shades of green, usually one fairly dark.

Hi there QM.

I have no problem mixing my own colours as I have done that many, many times with my 1/35 scale figures and armour models. As a matter of fact I greatly enjoy mixing my own paint colours. I was hoping to be able to use one of the spray cans of paint I have on hand that I mentioned in my original post.

The problem I am having now is finding the cokour of the PT boats in the South Pacific circa 1942 to 1943. What I require is an image showing the green used. With t he image I can approximate the colour by mixing my own colour if I need to.

For example, I have heard that the colour is Tropical Green. But what does this Tropical Green look like? Ditto for the other colours I have read about.

I also realize that the actual colour(s) of these PT boats varied greatly due to different mixes and thinning of the paint in the field as well as some crews experimenting with their own ideas for a good concealment colour.

So, to reiterate, what I require are some online samples of the possible colour(s) used on 1942 - 1943 era PT boats in t he South Pacific.

I am on a disability and can not afford $25 or so for sample paint chips. Besides that I really would like to repaint my old boat this weekend.

Thanks again from PeterTareBuilder

Hi again.

I just found a number of clear and fairly large colour samples at http://www.pt103.com/Ships_2_Colors.html. Not all of the PT boat colours are illustrated but there are a few that might be useful.

The SAC Bomber Green FS-34159 looks to be similar to Haze Green Revised 1943 5-HG. Green 1942 2A and Green 1942 41 appear to be close to an Army Olive I have.

So I guess my search has ended and I can use one of the spray can colours I have on hand. This is great as modelling funds are going to be tight again this month.

Cheers again from PeterTareBuilder
