A PHOTOGRAPH IN "AT CLOSE QUARTERS" SHOWS AN LST-TYPE TENDER LIFTING A PT BOAT OUT OF THE WATER WITH IT'S A-FRAME.
DID THE A-FRAME PIVOT BACK INBOARD TO ALLOW THE PT TO BE MOUNTED ON CHOCKS FOR REPAIR WORK? OVERHEAD VIEWS OF SIMILAR SHIPS DON'T SEEM TO HAVE SPACE AVAILABLE FOR A BOAT CRADLE. I'D APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION ON THESE LST-STYLE AGP's.

THANKS,
ROSS FISHER

This website shows the USS Silenus (ex LST 604) which was mentioned in the above post. It shows the ship had a crane that swings from the side of the ship to the inside of the ship's main deck. Note the crane arm on the port side of the ship in the photo with the crew at church services. Also in the distant ship's photo you can see the crane up high. My Uncle who was on the ARL 17 said they would lift small craft from the waters, place them on the main deck and make the repairs, then place them back in the waters. Sometimes they had a pontoon alongside to set them on if there were a lot of them that needed repairs at a particular island after they made an invasion. I don't think they necessarily had chucks built for the PT boats, but had chucks they made fit most any kind of small craft they brought aboard.

Could well be. an ARL. The "A" frame has capacity of about 60 tons and a fully loaded PT Boat displace about 55 tons. The PT would have had to be empty to safely lift. PT Boats in transit were carried on a custom cadle for lifting and the ARL would have to have same. Once lifted the boat and cradle would have to be set on a barge or pontoon as the "A" frame did not pivot.

Heres a photo of an LST with small boat on board.

MICHAEL,
THANKS FOR THE INFO ON LST's AND A-FRAMES. ODDLY ENOUGH, THE PHOTE OF AN AGP IN "AT CLOSE QUARTERS" SHOWS A PT BEING LIFTED WITH FOUR ROLL-OFF TORPEDOES IN PLACE. YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD DE-STORE THE BOAT BEFORE LIFTING IT. AN LSD WOULD BE THE IDEAL PT TENDER.
(P.S., EXCEPT FOR ILLINOIS, AUSTRALIA IS MY FAVORITE STATE.)

THANKS AGAIN,
ROSS
