First I am a PT boat newby but have been researching for many years relatives who served on boats.

Gary Szot and Walter Kundis - Isee you are both researching the sister boats to PT 523! My cousin was Lt. Robert Orrell commander of the 523 when it was attacked by the Jap planes (from "AT Close Quarters") Robert had part of his hand shot off in this attack. In a later section of Bulkey's book I see a Lt Russell on the 523. Does anyone know if this was because of the injuries Robert suffered? I have not been able to get his records from St. Louis. He was in Miami, FL in 1945 and San Diego in 1948 when he retired.

BTW: Robert was also on PT 3 in its brief existence and PT 6 (2nd). He was in RON 1 at Pearl Harbor but I do not know which boat he was on. They did, in fact pull survivors from the water. Family stories say Robert donated his Pearl Harbor photos to PT Inc?

Robert;

My dad was on the 525 boat on patrol with the 523 boat on the night in question. Like many other vets my dad never talked about the bad experiences during the war. He passed in 1992 and I never had the chance to really talk about his experiences.

All I know from that night is what is written in books. If you come up with anything new, please share.

Thanks for the reply, Gary.

I have made contact with Robert's daughter, but she was born after he retired and doesn't know much about his service.

Robert died in 1986 and I never met him.

Thanks, Gary

Thanks the photo Will sent. I don't know how I missed that! I blame it on Senior Moment and/or bad eyes!
