If a MoMM 1/c was promoted, what was the next rank? Was it Chief Motor Machinists Mate? Was he still a "Mate"? Would he then wear a uniform hat with a visor and an anchor emblem on the front rather than the white sailor's cap?

The Chief Petty Officer would still be a [Chief] motor machinist mate. The Warrant officers would be called a Chief Machinists (Chief Warrant Officer) or a machinist (Warrant Officer). If there was a warrant officer for that rating, everyone under him would have the designation as "mate". For example, Carpenter's Mate, Torpedoman's Mate, Electrictian's Mate.

Regarding a chief's uniform, it was completely different than the other enlisted men's uniform. Chiefs also had separate quarters. Their uniform was more like an officer's uniform. I probably never read the rule book, but I never heard the word "mate" in connection with torpedoman, radioman and several others. |

The Warrants that had "mates" were:
Boatswain
Machinist
Electrician
Gunner
Carpenter
Pharmacist
Torpedoman
Photographer
Aerographer
There were also these that didn't have a direct "mate":
Pay Clerk
Radio Electrician
Ship's Clerk.
