Gary: I know it doesn't look like it, but I believe that's the 209 boat.

Will; What was the 300 boat called?
I enlarged the bridge. It doesn't look like 209.

That's Hal Nugent's boat, the 210 in dry dock at La Maddalena, Sardinia. I have different angles of this boat in the dock - the numbers are for sure. The photo was taken by TM Henry Beazley during the summer of 1944.

Here's another zoomed version...I think this came up before because someone thought the numbers looked like 300. This isn't the clearest magnification (the original photo is roughly two inches by three inches) but a couple of things to note:
The numbers appear clear to me, but the center number is definetly a one.
The 210's font was large format numbers, in black, outlined in white. The Ron 15 boats seemed to have a wide assortment of number locations, font, size and color and the 210 is only one I've seen like this. Contrast it with the 209, which has the same font and size but the colors reversed.
The boat name, Little Poison, is the 210's name.
I've talked with the photographer as well...who confirmed where it was taken.

Wow! Where did you find that picture? The number does look like "300".
The name doesn't match; the 300 boat was named "Kamikaze Val" which is really spooky considering the end of the boat. Maybe it was called "Little Posion" in it's early days. Do you know where the picture was taken? DO you have any more - any with people on it? Thanks for posting the picture!

Sorry I couldn't post a picture of the 300 for you Colleen!
If you want to post a photo, all you have to do is upload it to some photo sharing site (like photobucket.com). Once you have uploaded it there, the image has a web address.
Read this thread to see how to post it here!

James;
I'm beginning to see it now. If the number of the boat was painted black and then outlined in white I can see where it could be mistaken for a "00".
You're right though in the fact that it was a 60 year old photo in a small format blown up. It's a wonder we can make out anything.

Yes Colleen, the 300 boat was at Mios Woendi (PT Base #21), as part of Ron 16B, arriving early Sep 1944 and moving up to the Philippines around early November. If possible, would you be able to e-mail the photo of your uncle to me? Also, what was your uncle's name and rate?
I'll send my e-mail when you get a chance to reply.
Thanks

Hi - my problem is that I don't know how to scan a picture to my computer. I will have to get some help on that one. I actually have two pictures. I could make a copy for you and send it in the mail. Thanks for the info on the movements of PT 300. There is very little information about this boat since the ship's log went down with the boat. I have read the description of the sinking, but that is about all I know. My uncle's name was Joseph Miles Brunner MM1c. I have a picture of my uncle and my father, who was also in the Navy in a C.A.S.U., and it was taken at a "base" somewhere when they happened to criss-cross paths in the Pacific. It was the last time my father ever saw his brother; I always wondered where in the Pacific it could have been - maybe it was Mios Woendi. It was taken inside a building so there is very little to go on for location. The story was always told that either my father or my uncle was shipping back to the US for some reason and the other one was shipping to the Pacific. When my dad found out that PT boats were in the port where he was, he went and hunted them down and found out the 300 was one of the boats! They were able to spend one evening together and then went their separate ways. When my uncle was killed my father was somewhere in the Pacific and he did not know what happened until Feb. His CASU was always on the move and at times mail did not catch up for many weeks. Where is Mios Woendi? I know that my father was everywhere in the Solomon IS - Henderson Field, Bougainville, Gilbert Is, Marianas, Guam - where ever there were planes, his unit was there. My aunt said that he talked a lot about "the Canal" and "the slot" - in reference to Guadalcanal I guess. My uncle's body was not returned to the United States until 1948 and my father went to the train station to be there when the casket was unloaded. Of course I decorated both graves for Memorial Day. I'm very proud of both of them!
