This is old news to experienced computer users, but fellow PT Boaters have you ever tried Google Earth--a free download? You can see some of your old bases from a different point of view. I was recently looking at Mios Woendi. I always knew that it was a very low lying island, but I can get only a zero elevation from google earth. I always thought that it might have a maximum elevation of six or eight feet.

Hello Frank, I've not had a chance to view msgs since early this month, and find many that interest me (as is usual). Thank you ALL for the wealth of information found on this board! I love history and the stories here truly bring it alive. I'm still attempting to obtain details of my father-in-law's time in the Navy and with PT's. Things I read here and share with him help to jog his memory a bit. He is recovering from a recent stroke - and now doing much better - long term memory still good.
Frank, your reply on subj: Mios Woendi, indicated you had some photos of the area and some of the boats. My father-in-law, Bill R. Tatroe, on his 2nd tour with PT's was with 16-B at the 'Windy Island' from Aug-1944 to Sep-1945. He was assigned to the PT-299, but more often was on the 300 or 301 boats riding as RM1c with the skipper James Van Sicklen.
He was 50' away from the 301 boat when it exploded at the dock on 7-Nov 1944. Just before the rons moved up to Leyte Gulf, he was transferred to Base #21 as a high-speed circuit operator (only he and Chief Tillack knew how to make it work). Otherwise, he may have been on the 300 when it got hit??
Was wondering Frank if you'd have any photos of these 3 boats, and any of the radio shack or other features around Woendi that you could share?
Will fwd my e-mail when you get a chance to reply. Thank you!

But does anyone have pictures of the 300 boat? I have been searching for years for pictures of that boat as my uncle was on it when it was hit and sunk. So would the 300 boat have been in Mios Woendi also?
Thanks very much!

Colleen:
Squadron 16 did have action in the Mios Woendi area sometime in 1944. I do not have any pictures of PT 300, which as you know was sunk December 18, 1944. I believe Lt. Comdr. Almer Colvin was at the wheel during this plane attack, which injured or killed all onboard except for one man...........

Thanks Mr Andruss. I wonder why it has been so hard to find pictures of this boat. I have one picture of my uncle on the boat, but it is a close up of him and very little of the boat. It was taken in Alaska, and my uncle does not look very happy - he looks very cold!
