Fred, My Grandpa's brother (my Uncle Howard_Howard E. Herling)was in Ron 33 & although I fished with him as a kid I didn't know he was a PT boater until after his & my Grandpa's death. I have been trying to find information on him since & just recently his daughter called me & told me she had located some of his photos while salvaging things from a fire that destroyed her house. She said he never talked about his service & his wife died before he did, so I have a lot of holes in what information I have about his time in the navy. I'm currently in the process of scanning & trying to restore his PT pictures. I work in graphic arts & high end scanning & color correction are part of my job, but photo restoration is a much more difficult task especially on 60 year old photos that have been through a house fire. However I have a few close up pictures of the cockpit of 497. The boat was named Many Pesos. I also have some pics with multiple boats in them, but no numbers visible on some of the boats. Some of them could be 497, but I have no way to tell. I also have some crew shots, but none with him in them(I'm assuming he took the photos & so isn't in the picture). I'd be very interested in you looking at the pics & telling me if any of the crew were crew mates of your uncle's. I don't know which boat in 33 my Uncle Howard was on, but I have his pics of boats 488, 490, 491, 494, 497, & possibly others, but you either can't read the numbers, or there are no numbers visible. I don't even know what his rank, or crew position was, So like I said I'd love to see if you could shed any light. The scans I have are 300dpi photoshop files, but I could save them smaller & in whatever format you want & e-mail them to you if you'd like.
Send me your e-mail address & I'll send you what I have.
I look forward to talking with you.

Blake, you might get a much wider response if you post any of your photos on this message board, and we would all appreciate the opportunity to share in this history and perhaps help reconstruct past events and experiences relevant to your family. Good luck!

Fred -
I was the radio/radar operator on the 497. Joe Contois was a GM3/C.
His nickname was "Popeye". A great guy!

Looking to find anyone who served on PTs 492 and 497 in November 1944. Those boats dropped off THOMPSON TEAM of the Alamo Scouts on Ponson Island.
Please email me at zee61@aol.com. Thanks!
Gus (aea51), please email me. I would very much like to hear about your experiences with 497.
