First, I wanted to say thanks for the 5 e-mails that I received in response to my post of Apr-29th, HELLO from RMC Bill R. Tatroe, PT Veteran.

Bill (Chief) was visibly moved by the words of encouragement. I read the emails to him in the hospital, and when asking him how he wanted to reply, part of his answer was:

These guys (the PT vets) are a great group of people... those you don't find anymore. So true.

Later, I asked him a very general question:

WHAT WORDS WOULD YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO THE YOUTH OF AMERICA TODAY? IMAGINE IF YOU WERE TO ADDRESS AN AUDITORIUM FULL OF HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR THEM? (I'll share his reply later), but first:

I would like to ask the PT veterans to answer this question. I think that we would all benefit from their input. We must draw on the experience of those who came before us - especially those who sacrificed to allow us to enjoy our freedom today.

This may be a little odd - posting a reply to my own post, but I did get two e-mails on this subject shortly afterwards. Ross Fisher, a new member to the PT Boats Msg board, was reading past entries and folllowed up with me asking what my father-in-law Bill had said regarding this subject.

Here is what RMC Bill Tatroe told me while he was in a hospital bed here in May:

"Choose a service or profession compatible with your thoughts and ambitions. Go at it full blast – don’t hold back. Be a good trooper and you’ll enjoy yourself."

I would like all vets to consider 'handing down' their thoughts by sharing what advice they would have for the younger generation. For a couple of years, I arranged to have WWII vets talk at a local high-school, and others to correspond with the students in a Sr. High History class. The students asked questions (via e-mail. letter or phone) and the vets replied. It was well worth it!! Maybe I could pass your replies on to the teacher again? What do you think??

you children of today can have a wonderful ,fruitful, rewarding life ahead of you.you have to work hard to attain your goals.they will not come to you.be careful of what your peeers ask of you.decide carefully if you are making the right decisions.if you have any doubts donm,t do it.only you can decidde what you can do with your life.if you decidde for greatness then go for it.the opportunities are there.don,t let race ,wrong desires and wrong decisions hold you back.the parents of yesteryear did not have it easy.they worked hard, had to endure depravations, had to make not only for themselves but for your futures too.we did not always make the right choices either, but we tried.family meant more then than it seems to do now.we prayed together, worked together, sang together, had real family lives.we enjoyed being together as family.we went to movies together.everything was as family.not seperate individuals.when world war 2 began we ALL came together aas one,we had to so we could make the world a better place for you.it wasn,t easy but we ALL did it together.then we also died together.we tried to make the worldd a better place.it seemss that,at times,we have failed but beleive me we keep trying.the world is in turmoil again so we have to stand together,NOW, to try and make it better again.we can,t do it alone.we need you to help us.i pray that we have some great leaders among you to take us to the right place so we can all be FAMILY again, like it used to be.use your minds, your hearts, your hands .before you needed us now we need YOU . help US now children.

You from the WWII generation have done so much for all of us as Earl has espoused so eloquently. Thank you for your heartfelt reply! If no one else posts an answer to this question, that's okay. Earl's words are an inspiration - thank you. If okay Earl, I will share them with the history teacher, so that she may use them in her class to give her young generation a personal perspective on what life was like, and what life can be.
