What an great photograph of the Motor Mac. Just how it was too, no shirt, pants rolled up, hat, old boondockers. What a job those guys did below. Not enough has been made about their jobs. No engines, no PT Boat, death to the Crew. Those guys should have gotten medals just to be below with those three throbbing Packards Power-plants.

Keeping those engines fine tuned was tricky business. Hot, dirty, noisey, and not knowing what is going on outside were just a few things these guys went thru. I have come across many of these guys that have hearing problems today. Wish I could hear the engines running on Jerry Gilmartin's boat. That is as close as anyone will ever get to knowing what it must have been like. Hey, Jerry how about a CD of those three engines running all at once, in different modes of operation. Start up, reving, slow speed, high speeds. I would pay for that for sure.

Earl

Thanks so much but I have been to that site a few years back. I am not so sure that the sounds they have are that of the real engines. They can reproduce many sounds these days, so I would love to hear the sounds from PT 658. In that way, I know for sure I would be getting the PACKARD ENGINE SOUNDS.

Hi Frank,
OK I will try to organize a high quality sound recording of the engines this summer when we get her back in the water. I think recordings taken from both inside the engine room and outside on the deck would be appreciated. Also maybe next to the boat from a chase boat? I will have to think about how to do that one. But yes you are right, those 3 V12 Packards sure do sound great when they are all running together. It really shakes the whole boat too! Jerry

Thanks Jerry

I can't speak for everyone, but I think if you guys came out with a CD, that not only contains those wonderful packard engine sounds, but a look at the boat underway at slow speeds, high speed, docking, and possible mock torpedo attacks or gun attacks, it would make a great fund raiser for your group. I would pay for the CD for myself no doubt.
