maybe you can ask Jack, I don't know if this was common practice within RON 22, but as you can see in the damaged stern photo PT 308 had plywood numbers painted black and nailed onto the stern(I would say 1/4 " thick). When I was on the 308 boat back in 1987-88 as she lay on the bank in Deleware, they were still on the stern! I have seen a color photo(at PTHQ) of the 308 boat moored in Toulon France with a few other boats and you can see the numbers clearly, the numbers are slightly bigger than the other boats painted numbers, some boats in RON 22 had no stern numbers.
