I received this message and the picture that went with it but I never seen this picture before. I am not too familiar with the procedure in this web but I am willing to try. I will be sending you my address when I am more familiar. I am curios. Are you an only child or the oldest or what? |

Sorry, I know nothing about that rounded disc.
I was the radioman so most of my time was sent in the chartroom where the radio equipment was contained. I can identify most of the people but not all of the people.
I am still trying to figure out the procedure on this website.

I am still trying to figure out what all those icons mean on the top.
In the latest picture that you sent, it looks like Hallie Skiles, GM in the turret, Art Schwerdt, QM, standing on the day room, next to him, your father at the wheel,
McLaugllin, LtJG standing behind him on the day room, Arnold Beckett, TM by the antenna. I don't recognize the guy sitting on the torpedo because he is
somewhat distorted. I don't believe that he was a crew member so one
possibility is that he is Lt. Cmdr Robert Bolling Kelly, the CO of Ron 9.
I remember all of this but I remember him real well.

Pat,
It is great you responded so quickly.
I added the information to my last photo for you to double check. I am working to apply the info to the first. I'll keep sending others as well.
I am working on a large project of collecting all the information from books and the internet to make a present for my Dad. He rarely talked about his military experience so I am counting on you and others. I have a few stories and I am trying to get them on tape.
As my Dad lives in Rhode Island I took him to Melville this last January.
I am the third child. My sister was born when you were at Lever Harbor in August 1943. My brother was born when my Dad was stationed at Great Lakes in Feb 1945. I am the after thought born in Jan 1949.
Frank .. I will gladly share what I have with all. I have next week off from work and will do the scanning you mentioned in your email. This is a great organization and I will contribute as much as I can. I wont go away.

Dave,
In addition to the circular piece in front of the starboard turret (whatever it is), notice also the plate over the missing binnacle's spot on the top of the 154's charthouse....
Nat, thank you for posting your Dad's photos, and please pass on to him our thanks for his service....
He, his ship mates and their boats endlessly fascinate us PT buffs....

Great observation Drew. Looks like it was removed for some reason. I also noticed that there's no visible mast and the armor behind the helm is gone. I like the cover over the wind screen as well.
The other thing that strikes me are the crew. You would never guess rank, especially the Commander sitting on the right side of the picture. I wish I had some talent for modeling figures. The best way to display a PT crew is just like in this photo. Half dressed and under fed.
Pat, do you recall what you did with your mast? Was it removed or had the boat been converted to radar and perhaps it's lying down?
Thanks for sharing and we're looking forward to more.
Dave

I have this picture of PT154 which clearly shows the mast. I remember my father saying he was not outfitted for radar prior to November 14, 1943. Pat's memory will be important here.
I never recall my dad saying he was underfed. He did comment that his cook could make SPAM taste many different ways as they had SPAM almost every day. He said it took him years after the war before he would even try SPAM again. Again this is a great topic for Pat ... what was the food conditions on board in these forward bases? My dad was at Lever Harbor and Treasury Islands that I know of.
Pat ... where were you based in the Solomons?

Another great picture! What do you supose that object is in the foreground? It looks like an air scoop but it doesn't belong there.
Thank you for sharing.
