HA Frank! My Grandfather "graduated" from MTBSTC in April of 44...so I was scouring Gary's photo looking for Pop's face! Still a nice photo anyway!

It probably doesn't matter much, but just for the sake of accuracy, please let me clarify the meaning of the flag (banner) shown in the picture of the training class in front of the Quonset huts. The N.T.S. represents the Naval Training Station, one of the many seperate entities at the Newport facility during the war which included the Fuel Depot, MTBSTC, Underwater Ordinance, the War College, Net Depot, the Torpedo Station and I believe it was not until after the war that each of these was brought under the umbrella of the NavStaNpt which represented the Newport Naval Station. This is not well studied, just my recollections as a kid growing up in the area with a father who was Chief of the MTBSTC (following service in PT 113, etc. of Div 17) until it was melded into the NavStaNpt as a single entity. It was a huge operation . Many communities, etc. can be measured by the size of their fire depts. and NavStaNpt ran 33 fire companies including engine (pumper) cos., ladder cos., and two fire boats converted from Navy tugs, as I recall. I used to have a metal plate that attached at the top of a motor vehicle registration plate that read "N.T.S". with a four digit number, painted black and white that was at one time on my father's personal vehicle. Prior to that he had a sign shaped as a maltese cross that was red, blue, black and white. It was mounted on top of a red warning light on a black 1940 Pontiac and it read "Chief, MTB STC FD USN" It was really sharp. The NTS metal signs were replaced at some time during the fifties with decals in the windows. Sorry, just rambling here.

How are you coming on the Book. I was curious where you are at with the progress of the writing. Let me know if you need any other items as I have artifacts from MTBSTC..............

Thanks for asking Frank. I actually stopped actively working on it at the end of March. When I realized it was March 30 and I hadn't done my taxes, and a few other things, I had to put it aside (I was getting a bit obsessed). Plus I had a lot of other events I had to do this spring that took up a lot of my time. I've done a little bit more research but not a lot. I'm pretty much freed up this summer. Next week I'll be at the PT Boat convention, be doing some interviews and then I'll be jumping back in with both feet.
Not to worry, it won't go away.
