Hi precious PT Boaters, I'm looking for insight into this picture, which I cropped from a group pix of my Dad and some mates on board PT175 circa 1944. I have another picture of my Dad actually painting on these, or additional stripes. Is the vessel a barge? Are the stripes hits,or 'kills'?
Thank you! and thanks for the great instructions previously posted here on how to post pix. Jonnie

Hi Jonnie-
First of all, thanks for posting the picture. Yes, those ticks below the silouette indicate "kills" for Japanese supply barges. Early in the war, PT Boats battled large ships of the Imperial Navy. Around 1943 the boats shifted to the gunboat role. Each night they patrolled deep in enemy waters, primarily looking for barges which brought supplies for the Japanese troops at the front lines. PT Boats often displayed a "scoreboard" on the side outside the cockpit to show off thier combat prowess. Also shown were planes and ships if applicable. Again, thanks for sharing!
