Wayne Traxel sent me a plan drawing of RON 9's PT-156, It shows a Mk-12, 20 mm turret mountreplacing the forward twin 50's. Does anyone have any details on this mount. I will be attempting to replicate it on the Italiria 80 'Elco in 1/35 scale.

Yes,... Wayne. He did a very nice set for the MK12 mount.

Thanks Al.
Made this drawing in 2003 and is based on photos and written info provided by Former skipper of PT-156, Rex Anderson and Alex Johnson. Cradel appears different from those found on the Mk-4 and Mk-10 deck mounts. Viewing from the front its shaped like a sturrip on a western saddle. It appears (at least to me) that the Mk-17 mount was increased in length at the top of the mounting to accomodate the length of the gun. The lower portion of the mount is reinforced with triangular gussets and support rails are different.

Wayne: Are your drawings of the 20mm turret mount available for purchase?

Steve -

FYI:

The series of boats that the Italeri kit represents would not have that mount.

If you wanted to do one of the Ron 9 boats that had that mount? You're going to need to do a lot of plastic surgery to back date the kit to that series of boats.

The old Revell PT-109 kit would be a better candidate for such a conversion.

Just my 2 cents ...

Thanks, Garth, but I am a stubborn old cuss with my trusty Exacto knife at the ready. Santa brought me the kit this morning and I am still determined to model the 156 boat with the Quad 50 mount. Thanks for your continurd help and support. Loved your In Action Book and look forward to the update! Happy Holidays!

Thanks Steve,

If you need any help with the backdating, please let me know - I'll try my BEST to help.

Alex Johnson is going to be doing the 195 with the quad-50 mount and the 20mm (I think) in the turrets by using the old Revell kit and the WEM PE set and their Mark XIII torpedoes and 40mm and the like. Wayne even gave us the quad-50 mount in 1:76 scale...

I'm not sure that the upgrade to my PT book will happen, I'll need to ask Squadron first. I've just returned to their author line up yesterday.

OK, Garth, I give in and bow to your wisdom. Too much modification for 1/35th scale. I also will switch to 1/72nd scale and modify the Revelle kit. I have the 37mm and roll off torpedoes on order from WEM and have purchased a 1/76th scale quad 50.

Now for the 1/35th scale Italeri PT-596 kit. I would like to do PT-328 as depicted in your "In Action" publication. Are there any significant modifications to the kit that I need to be aware of?

Many thanks for your guidance!

Steve: Al Ross offers a good packet regarding mods on the Italeri kit. His wegsite is Coastal Forces. The infor packet sells for $25, and is well worth the money.
