have about 100 questions but will post just a few for now. Searching for the pt boat my uncle was on during the war. His name JOSEPH W CONTOIS served in the pacific and had been sent to Florida to be in the movie THEY WERE EXPENDABLE with the pt boats riding along with other boats. Any informatin on how to gain access to his records or information. He passed away last march and had told me he kept in touch with other members. He had sent photo's while in New Guina and a copy of his certifict from motor torpedo boat training center, With S2C,813 51 62,V-6S. can any one tell me what this means.
Thank You

fred

Other more helpful people will be along with better answers, but my limited knowledge is this:

S2c is Seaman Second Class.

813 51 62 is his serial number.

V-6S is his rating if I remember correctly.

Do you have a copy of his seperation papers? That'll help you figure out a lot more about his service. Their next of kin can also request paperwork from the National Archives - you don't even have to go to DC for it!

Also look for the fancy discharge papers - it looks something like this:

I'm suprised at home incomplete some records are (the discharge papers are missing several stops on Pop's trip through the service, but the seperation papers have pretty much everything:

Gus, I hate to be the one who questions posts, but...How could tell ronb that his grandfather was a gunners mate when his military records show that he was a QM 1/c when he was discharged.
You must somehow have another Stanton in mind.

Gus ,

I must apologize. I guess I don't know the difference from Stanton and Contois. I saw Stanton's discahrge papers that was posted and I jumped at conclusions.

Sorry. Have a merry Christmas.

Watch this board for later tonight I am going to send the most beautiful Christmas card to all the members of this board. It is something to be seen.
