Any help on the history of an operational WWII derelict? Hull #998366 built in 1944. Powered by two Detroit 12V-71 main engines with Twin Discs and two smaller Detroit (3-71 & 2-71) generators.
She is fully operational and runs great, ENGINES STRONG. Just cleaned bottom installed new zincs and replaced Starboard propeller. In search of a pair of OEM Bronze 12.5" long 8-bolt 3" id Split Muff Coupling for replacement on the existing bronze 3" od Propeller Shafts, will post an additional topic on this matter.
Pass down oral history was that she was commissioned in Spring of 1944. She served as coastal defence and based out of Boston until 2 years after the end of WWII. Afterwards she was refitted with Oceanographic mapping for charting coastal Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. In 1974 she was reassigned to the West Coast transited the Panama and refitted from gasoline to twin Detroit V-12 Detroit Diesel engines. At some point a pilot house was added. After oceanographic mapping on the West Coast and Inside Passage of SE Alaska, coastal Alaska, and Alutian chain of the Pacific she passed into private hands sometimes in the eighties.
An addition of a front fiberglass structure extending the pilot house happened within the past twenty years.
Current operational status is BUBF. Pictures are available but not able to post due to file size limitations.
Can anybody help me with verified history?
Tony C.

Welcome Tony!
Do you know what was the type of Vessel? Was it a Minesweeper, or was it a Coastal Motor Boat or was it a Sub Chaser or something else? You mention her engines were changed over from gasoline to diesel in the past, but a Detroit 12v71 is a Diesel. So what was the manufacturer of the gas engine she had before and how much hp did it have? What was the length and beam of the vessel. I may be able to help if I knew where to start looking. Simply giving the hull number without any other context is not enough to go on.

As Jerry has indicated, a hull # alone does little. Pictures would e a significant help as would a description of the vessel and dimensions of her also.
There were many ,many "patrol boats" built in the States during the war, Army, Navy, and British as well. The Navy, alone, had more than a half dozen different classifications of patrol craft under which she could have fallen.
In short, please provide as much specific information about her as possible.

Tony,
Most computers have a picture resizing feature that will allow you to shrink the size of the photo, allowing you to more easily post it..

Tony,
Do you have any of the names under which she sailed when in private hands? I have my suspicions, but I need more information. Dimensions would help immensely.
