Where was the last commissioned PT boat stationed. I work with a guy who claims he was on the boat when he was statoined in Virginia. I tried to look it up on Navsource but saw no boats in Virginia. He tends to be a "tommy topper" so I don't take him too serious. He was in the navy during early 80's. Regards to all scott

Not an expert.but maybe he is referring to one of the Nasty class boats the USN used during Vietnam? Some of them were based in Virginia...and time line seems to work. Just a thought.....

Scott;
What year is “Tommy Topper “ talking about? Post War MTB RON 1 was stationed in Norfolk, 1946-1950’s with PT’s 613,616,619, 620. Then PT 809, 810,811,812. PT 809 was reassigned as a Secret Service Presidential chase boat, then post Kennedy -Johnson-Nixon eras was redesignated DR-1, a Drone Retriever, with VC-6, mostly working out of Cherry Point and Morehead City, NC.
In 1989-1990 we got her a Special Boat Squadron Two. We only really used her once a year to go to Norfolk Harborfest, until 1993-1994. Then she went to our boneyard and sat in a cradle(which I have a photo of at home). Our the Commodore at the time, ADM(SEAL) Eric T. Olsen tried to get her adopted by a museum, and I had heard that the USS Alabama Museum was going to take her, but I guess that plan fell through, as they now have one of our 65’ MKlll PB’s on display.
She was not scrapped in 1990. If she was, it was 1994-95. For all I know, she might have been expended as a target as Osprey PTF-25 was in Pemblico Sound NC, near Cherry Point. It was modified to look like a Komar Class Missile Boat, and just pounded into oblivion.
I am not sure of PT 809’s final disposition.
Take care,
TED

Ted, all I can say is that the co-worker was in the navy during the early 80s. he was not assigned to a PT only saw it and had a chance to board her at some point. he was assigned to a battleship. thanks again for the info. I may try to find out if the co-worker remembers anything more about the boat. number or if he knows if it was aluminum.
