All;
I recently read a post somewhere where someone was asking the question “Why don’t we ever read or hear anything about Japanese PT Boats”? Well the simple answer is, to Japanese Naval High Command, they were an after thought and therefore, not utilized properly. unfortunately, They were totally ineffective and had absolutely zero effect on the war.
I have been researching in what might one consider ridiculous depth, of all Coastal Forces, Allied and Axis, since the 1980’s, and I can honestly say, I have never read of a Japanese PT Boat attack of any kind.
Most Japanese PT’s were either detected and engaged close to an island, usually, hidden by natural and man made camouflage, or were the recipients of a strafing by F6F Hellcats or F4U Corsairs much like the Japanese PT Boats we see here:

That is interesting Ted! I imagine, they didn't need them, because the Japanese Destroyers were basically unrivaled in the first months of the war. And, as you say, the later Allied air superiority, meant they were worse then sitting ducks. Cheers, Dennis
