This posted material is from a series of 1939 issues of MotorBoating magazine:

This posting is starting in 1939 to see if there appeared to be any impact of the start of WWII in Europe, on U.S. motor boating. Even though this war had been looming for many years. I was interested in the tenor of the subject, if any, and what was being written about in specific boating publications, not news related publications.

Funny, as I read through the magazines, I kept having this vision in my head of the upper crusted Mr. & Mrs. Thurston Howell III, of Gilligan’s Island. The publication is clearly not a father, son, trout fishing vacation at, Camp Granada, type publication. It is a serious leisure/luxury boating magazine.

The following 1939 issues will include a couple of motor torpedo boat related stories but many more items will be magazine advertisements (which I have great interest in). Specially from PT manufacturers like Elco and Huckins. However, Higgins doesn’t really enter into advertising in this publication till late 1942 through 1946. In this collection of ads, there are no war relate content, simply leisure. This lack of WWII content also continues through the 1940 and 1941 issues as it relates to advertising.

The Motor Boating magazine publication began in 1907, with publishers including the Hearst’s Magazine Publisher, as well as others. The magazine name was changed in 1970 to “Motor Boating and Sailing”, and again to “MotorBoating” in 2000. The magazine’s publication came to an end in 2011. It was/is a copyrighted publication, and current status or ownership of copyrights since, are unknown.

Thanks Dick, it is fun to see the pre war boats from ELCO and Huckins! Man, there are 10 lifetimes of RC boat inspiration there! Cheers, Dennis

Dennis . . .

Here is the link to the Google Books page where you can find most of these issues. Most include basic plans, that a good modeler could probably work into a model. it is a wealth of information. Each issue runs around 150 pages with yearly specials of nearly 400 pages - mostly ads though.

Link to Googles scans of MotorBoating magazine:

Click the year - then month - then click on the upper Thumb Nail of that issue and the issue will open up full page on your screen - better use a computer, not a smart phone.

Thanks again Dick, so many beautiful old classic boats. I'm with you Dennis, lots of great R/C subjects!

Wow Huckins, that's a pretty creepy ad:

I've received a couple emails about my "Camp Granada" reference in the original post:

"Funny, as I read through the magazines, I kept having this vision in my head of the upper crusted Mr. & Mrs. Thurston Howell III, of Gilligan’s Island. The publication is clearly not a father, son, trout fishing vacation at Camp Granada type publication. It is a serious leisure/luxury boating magazine."

I added the Camp Granada reference, because it came to mind when categorizing magazine types. In this case the father/son fishing trip, even though Camp Granada has nothing to do with a trip. But it captures a mind-set between general boating and the MotorBoating yacht club crowd. Camp Granada is featured in a big hit song back in 1963, quite hilarious, see YouTube:
