The M-2 Aircraft 50 caliber machine gun was used on PT Boats. The M-2 had a shorter barrel and weighed less then the standard 50 caliber. It had a higher rate of fire as well, although a shorter range. The basic aircraft gun came without a trigger or the side bracket with the charging handle called the retracting slide group (RSG). PT boats used this basic gun along with a mount supplied trigger and usually a simple bolt handle for charging the gun instead of the RSG. Unlike the RSG, which operates against a short stud and remains stationary during firing, the bolt handle travels back and forth with the bolt. The guns were belt fed from curved ammo boxes inside the turrets.

Frank, where did you get the first picture of the sailor manning the twin m2 machine guns? What PT boat is this from?

I'm with you there Frank.

The photo came from one of my favorite sites, Gene Kirkland's PT King. The only info I have about it is Morobe in its name although I don't see it in the many pages of photos under the Morobe New Guinea July-October 1943 link. For any that haven't seen it before there is lots to read and see there. Our fearless leader Dick Washichek hosts it here: http://www.pt-king.gdinc.com/
