I have a question about the rear gun mount on this boat. According to NAVSOURCE this boat was test fitted with a prototype Lightning gun system. This was not the system that was ultimately deployed. I suspect that this was removed from PT-160 before it was deployed to the Pacific. So the question is, what gun did she carry with her into the Pacific theatre? This photo which is the best I can find of this boat, does not give a clue as to what is installed back there. There is no depression railing that I can see to indicate whether it was a 20mm or 40mm gun. Does anyone have any information about this?
Thank you
Dave

It definitely has a 20mm and 37 on the bow, and it looks like it has a 20mm in the front gun tub and twin 50s on the rear tub. In the Navsource photos, it looks like a 20mm in the front tub, and in the video below, either the 160 or the 156 has a 20mm in the front tub. There are stern shots of a 20mm, but I don't know which boat. If the camera man would have zoomed out just a little, I think we would know for sure! Hope this helps at least a little.

Dave, I'm assuming you meant a Thunderbolt mount...

Hello Shipmates!
Many of you may be familiar with the USS New Jerseys Youtube Channel hosted by newly selected HNSA President Ryan Szymansky (?sp) and there are a lot of great videos on there, but I recently discovered the USS Massachussetts has their own excellent You Tube Channel called "Battleship Cove America Fleet Museum"
and I have been avidly watching numerous videos recently posted that concern PT Boats. One of these videos shows PT160 and PT162 picking up Japanese Prisoners off the coast of Zamboanga in late 1944. The boats had been greatly modofied by then from how they looked in 1942 when the other video was filmed. It appears to me the 162 (and likely 160 as well) has a low slung 40mm Bofors cannon mounted on the stern. Low slung as in it is not installed on the pedestal, but instead was bolted directly to the deck. That is why is is so hard to see from the bow. Here is a link to the video and see for yourself. You cannot actually see the stern of 160 but I am making an educated guess.

Thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening...

Here are the 157 and 161 that appear to also have low slung 40mm's with no limiting stops:
