Hope someone on the forum can help, I am looking to build my first PT Boat model over the winter time. My question is which company makes the best and largest Elco 80 foot PT Boat model offered for sale? I am building a replica of my Uncles boat PT 380 which was a 80 Ft Elco from RON 28.

Sounds similar to my recent project to build a model of PT-352.

I took the advice from this forum to improve it. I started with the new Revell 1/72 scale PT-579/588 kit, but used the front superstructure and a few other parts from the Revell 1/72 PT-109.

Shapeways sells 1/72 scale figures to go with it. I used their PT boat crew figures, plus a few modern US infantry figures with boonies caps, which worked very nice for Alamo Scouts. Shapeways also sells a better radar mast than the one that comes with the kits.

US Navy PT Boat paint sets are also available online.

I haven't built a model in decades, and it's not museum quality, but this was a fun project during the early days of the shutdown. I should post a photo now that it's done.

Hello Travis,
Hands down in my opinion is the Italieri 1/32 scale model. This is for the best details and largest Elco 80 foot PT Boat model. Finished product is over twice the size of the old revell models of PT109. They also have a lot of aftermarket detail kits you can buy to soup it up if you want to. Jerry

I'll second the Italeri kits. They made 2, a 109 kit and a 596 that reflect the changes made to the boats. I don't know how crazy you want to get with accuracy, if "close enough" is good enough then Italeri's 596 kit would probably be your best bet. It has the forward angled turrets that your Uncles 380 had.

If you find that 1/35 is a bit too large, another choice you have is the 1/48 kit that was originally sold by Merit International and later released under the I Love Kit banner. You'll find it's almost an exact copy of the Italeri kits. They are available in both early and late war models. For PT-380 you will want the late war version of the kit.

All three manufacturers and scales have the late model PT Boat option. There are a bunch of the Merit/I Love Kit offerings on eBay. You can find them under the I Love Kit banner at Sprue Brothers.

Like most boats, there are a lot of interesting field implemented changes to the 380.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out to us. Have fun with your build!
Dave

The aft turret depression rail is odd, it is tilted forward quite a bit in relation to the turret.

Maybe some added protection for the 40mm?

Nice photo Dave! If you look closely you will notice that the aft head is in place underway !
Take care,

The photo that's posted is from my Uncles personal photo album. On the back of the picture my Uncle wrote"The boat is under way going 40 knots, it was the last patrol on Luzon, you can see me I am wearing a white shirt standing in the cockpit".
