On my PT 176, my dad is building, I had him add a dog to the bow, in memory of the other war heroes. Does anyone have stories or photos of a war dog that may have served w/them. I'd love to hear them. Any info would be sooo greatly appreciated!!

That's Umbriaggo...the mascot of PT 209, taken in Summer/Fall of 1944. That's my grandfather hiding in Frenchie's shadow on the far left.

Umbriaggo was a mascot of sorts the crew picked up on R&R they and PT 210 received in Italy after being shot up during Operation Brassard, the Elba invasion. The dog was found wandering the streets and someone (no one remembers who) brought him back to the boat. He had a couple dozen ticks on him and the crew spent a day or two using cigarettes to get the buggers to release themselves from his body before they'd let him roam the PT.

The dog lived with the crew for the three and a half months they had left before the squadron was decom'd - I don't know what happened to him after that. I do have pictures of him though all the way through October until the boats were sent to Malta to be turned over to the Brits/Yugos.

Here's the pup being held by one of the 209's torpedo men on October 8th after heading out to sea to shoot off all their ammunition before sending the boat to Malta.

This one was taken in August of 1944, after Operation Dragoon with sailor Ray Conageski:

Interesting thread. My father Sebastian Listro) was in Ron 27, PT359 in the South Pacific. They also had a war dog Not sure about the dog's name. I'll ask him. If I could figure out how to post pictures, I include a photo of the crew and dog.

posting pictures is a breeze, you just need a photobucket account. www.photobucket.com, upload the pictures & you will get an image code, just paste that code here.. and the pictures should come up..

hope that helps
