I just noticed that the photo of 33 is a doctored photo of 20. Initially, PT20 had the birdcage turret domes of the 70' boats and these are easily recognized in the photo when enlarged. Damn, I wish people wouldn't screw with original photos like this. The supposed photo of PT41 is a doctored shot of 32, as well.

Hey David, I always wondered what those 3 flags stood for. By the way they were called "Jig George Jig" in 1942. The newer names you referred to were not put into use until 1949 I believe. It seems that several of the Elco boats in these photos are displaying those 3 particular flags, so maybe it was a local signal to designate they were being tested by the builder and not yet in commission or something? I hope somebody knows the answer to this one!

Hey nice work Ted and Jerry! We've been discussing and wondering about that for a long time.

Please excuse this long time coming response to the Elco 80’-footer paint scheme.
When I reviewed and posted the various photos, PT 103, 117, & 129. I had noticed the 129-boat had what appeared to be a slight paint scheme difference compared to the others boats. Well . . . . . . Jeff and I had discussed this through a couple back and forth emails. Where he thought it was more likely a shadow than a paint scheme variation. And of course, being a smarty butt, he gleefully decided to prove me, yes I said, gleefully decided to prove me wrong. Can you believe it, wow! wow!, wow!.

So, Mr. Smarty Butt, better known as Jeff Davidson, got out his old rusty PT 103 3D modeling art, and proceeded to investigate how a similar shadow could achieved by adding some lighting effects to his 3D hull model.

Now, everyone must realize that he is adding all types of Hollywood 3D magic and boogaloo, just to make his desire effect seem plausible. I will let you be the judge of his trickery and smugness . . . . Yes I will let you be the judge!

ALL I HAVE TO SAY . . . it sure looks like a shadow instead of a paint scheme variant . . . Nice work, Jeff! ! ! !

LOL when you first mentioned it, I hadn't even noticed it. I guess I don't have a good eye for the obvious! Then I thought interesting and also thought it was a nice paint touch. It wouldn't have been the first example of a custom paint job we've seen, witness the Elcopuss. Then I remembered an image I had seen the previous day on another forum of an aircraft carrier with what looked like unusual camo. Most agreed but one NARA researcher said it was shadow and posted another shot from the same time frame with a solid color. So I whipped out my model and spent hours futzing with lighting and happened upon a close match. I whooped loudly and knew I could use it to make you LOOK BAD! BWAHAHAHA!!! :D
