Great drawings and pics Andy! I don't have a particular boat in mind, I am doing research and learning. Dick shared some of his "Cutaway" drawings of the Higgins and the Elcos which I found to be very eye opening. I can't wait to see how your project goes. It looks good already!

The two pipes are the air intakes I believe. The intakes are the vents just aft of the 50 cal mounts.

See Jerry's response for correction.

Thank you Andy. Smart design, getting cooler denser air to the carbs means more power.

I am fairly certain those 2 vertical pipes are water cooling vent lines connected to the fresh water expansion tank. The 658 has similar single pipe that rises up to our expansion tank. I don't quite understand why they have 2? Maybe to try and improve cooling flow from the cylinder jackets and prevent air or steam vapor bubbles from forming inside the water jackets for each cylinder bank? Anyway I am positive those are NOT air intakes. because you can plainly observe the direct connection to the cooling water manifold outlet elbows using hose clamps and a rubber hose section. Additionally, you can see the Carburetor Intake Screen mounted on top of the carburetor with a canvas cover over it. Any air intake should be attached to the carburetor or intake screen and not the fresh water manifold. I can post a couple of photos in the next message so you can see what I mean.

Thanks for correcting me, i wasn't sure but I def would not have guessed cooling water vents. I do have some info buried somewhere that should have a detailed diagram of the engine compartment. I'll post as soon as I locate.
