It was thought that there was only one boat that carried the maxon mounted power turret. This boat was PT-195. Not long ago I located a photo that showed the maxon mounted on the stern of PT-189, which was a significant photo in that it proved more than one boat had this mount

Nice find Frank . . .

Here is a image we always see floating around, it was identified as PT195. Also is an isometric line-drawing I made of the Maxon M45 some time way back.

Not sure of this mount found favor on the boats that had them. I would have preferred a heavier caliber weapon. I have however seen video footage of this mount in action and brother it threw out a lot of lead. Nice drawing Dick.

PT 195, and PT 156(I think Wayne discovered this one), and now 189, nice find Frank!
Stearman is correct, PT 174 in summer 1945 had the Thunderbolt.
Take care,
TED

I for one would like to see any definitive photos of this mount on the 174 boat. I also read once, that it was supposedly a Thunderbolt mount? Again, no photos. Also, she supposedly was converted to late war armament at the end of her career, ie 20mm and 37mm on the bow and 40mm on the fantail. No photos to support this either. We do know, the 174 had a 40mm on the bow with a strange shield installed by ELCO with the 20mm on the stern, stateside, plenty of photos of this. Then in the Pacific, she had a 40mm, (possibly Australian Army) with a cut down shield, and a 20mm on the stern, photos and a short news reel of this! One thing for sure, you can never get board researching PT Boats!

I couldn't find any photos of the Maxon on other boats but here's some shots of the 174 Stearman. They sure weren't afraid to make changes! Dick's Elco 80 drawing collection has construction details of the structure around the bow 40mm which would be handy for modelers recreating her.

The Thunderbolt on the stern:

The bow 40mm:

The 174 in everybody's favorite camo:

The 171, I've noticed that modelers tend to treat the hull, torpedo tubes, houses, etc separately when painting the zebra pattern. It should look like a continuing pattern when viewed from the sides which is what makes it so confusing. You can hardly tell that there are torpedo tubes in this image:

Thanks Jeff! I have all of those photos and drawings. That's where I got the Thunderbolt in my head. Strange they would go with that configuration, when most of the Skippers were complaining about the lack of hitting power with the 20mm? But I guise if you have six 20s, you may have enough. I am not bragging mind you, but these days, I have a mind like a steel sieve!
