My son is in the process of buying a 80 foot Elco model (1/20 scale) of the PT-109. It needs some work. (From what I can determine this was in the PT-103 through PT-196 sub-class.)

He liked the way I built the 1/20 scale PT-61 as a gunboat, so what he would like to do is make it unique, armament, color, history, etc. not just another 109. (This is an RC model.) Any ideas / suggestions?

You might want to check out Stu Hurley’s build of PT 195. The 195 has one of the most unique weapons arrangement that I have seen on a early ELCO boat.

Thanks!
Jeff

Hi,
Looks a nice model.
195 would be looooots of work in 1/20th. I had a lot of help with available 1/35 parts for that build. How about 157? Quite a few photos to support the changes and nice artwork.
Best of luck with it.

Best Regards,
Stu.

PT 147 would be great conversion. She had many incarnations, first with a 40mm Bofor on the bow, with a elaborate shield around it, done at the Elco factory. Then, if that wasn't elaborate enough, zebra paint camo was added. Then the Bofor was removed, but when they got to the Pacific, an Australian army Bofor with a cut down shield was put back on the bow, and still in the zebra paint. Then she was painted green, and roll off torpedoes were added. There are a few photos of her, and even some film of her in action. Plus, there are a few threads on here that mention the Bofor conversion! Just found out, Shipways makes a 1/20 Bofor, Navy mount, so will need some mods, but nothing you can't handle with you skill sets.

Stearman;

You meant PT 174 RON 10(Not PT 147). The one incarnation you didn't mention was they removed the 40MM forward sometime during 1944, probaly put in the normal location on the stern. Then added 2 20MM and a 37MM forward. It also looks like they have single .50 Cals Port and Stbd,(alongside the cockpit) on either pipe mounts or tripods In 1945, they put a Quad 20MM Thunderbolt mount on the stern.

Both are of PT 174 RON 10 1945 Philippines. The second photo, must be some kind of fam ride, there are 24 guys on deck, that I can see!

Lew;
PT 146 RON 12 is an idea, Bill Skades boat.

PT 131 RON 7.....lots of weapons!

PT 132 RON 7 and later RON 21

PT 134 RON 7 and later RON 25

PT 137 RON 7.....supposedly called the most heavily armed PT in the Pacific

The RON 7 Boats all had lots of weapons for the Surigao Strait engagement.

Yes. Pt-174, must have a little dyslexia! She also sported a Mark 15 mount Thunderbolt as seen in your photos. She must have a record for the most changes in armament of any Pt boat.

PT 174's forward 40mm would be cool. There's also some plans for the structure around it on Dick's Elco drawing set.

Nice list Ted. The 131 had a unique weapon mounted, beach barrage rockets in eggcrate launchers. The boat had to do the aiming although elevation was adjustable. Note the blast shields aft of the launchers, a 37mm partially visible at the bow, and a 60mm mortar sitting on top of the chart house:

Great info guys! Thanks a lot. There was a delay in getting the boat this weekend due to the storm off the east coast. I'll keep you posted.
