Sorry, I just think that the people here who have long known and researched her should get some credit. Not me by the way, I learned of her long ago through other member posts here. Ah well.

I've seen several photos and a short video of the salvage work of the supposed PT 59, and the only thing recognizable to me is a single rudder. It certainly looks like a Elco-type PT rudder.

Ted . . .
Are you saying they (he) in fact verified it was PT 59, or were they just taking home the treasurers of a PT boat. Did they find the Elco hull number? Or, are they just assuming it is PT 59? Or, will we ever really know?

To identify her with 100 percent accuracy would be hard. They'd have to get lucky with the keel number, builders plate, or a traceable serial number on a part. Although there should be a number of parts such as brackets and electrical boxes that were unique to a 77' Elco and likely to have still been on her when she sank.
This is what the rudder should look like, the drawing doesn't mention any markings:

Jeff;
The rudder recovered is an 80' rudder. With that being said, PT 59 was in drydock and being refitted to a gunboat by USS Argonne(AS-10), at Tulagi, during the last two weeks of SEPT 1943. It is logical, that during this time period the rudders were replaced, as well as anything else that needed replacing blow the waterline. The 77' parts supply would have been drying up around this time anyway, and the slightly larger surface area of the 80' rudder would appear to be more efficient in turns with the added weight forward.
