Remember, these are PT Boats we're talking about. I can see how somebody would be confused looking at the photo above and this one. The pivots are not exactly parallel to the waterline. To your point I have seen photos of a nest of late model boats where they are all parallel to the waterline.

Sheesh David, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able do even a halfway decent job with bending those tiny PE linkages.
Here's from 2 muffler drawings, it looks like the butterfly shafts are at right angles to the bodies:

I checked some other drawings, looks like they straightened them out on the later boats. Good call Larry:

I went through all the muffler drawings, it looks like PT's 103-162, except for PT 146, had the butterfly shafts at right angles to the mufflers and the rest of the Elco 80s had them parallel to the water line. This matches the boats with the small external water cooling feed pipes (the earlier boats, see the 109 image) vs those that didn't. |
