Regarding the "German Marine," keep in mind that "Marine" is the German word for Navy. Hence the WWII Kriegsmarine. The "marine" might be a sailor.

There were the MARINE-STOSSTRUPP-ABTEILUNG, not really Marines as most of us know them, more an elite infantry that were also sailors. I could see an American PT boatman listing to the German rattleoff a bunch of unrecognizable words, then he heard Marine and just assumed the rest.
