. . . . I had a very nice and long talk with Victor Chun the other day. It’s been several months since we last talked or went to lunch for Broccoli Beef and Rice . . . not to mention sweet Lychee nuts - Yummmm.

I am posting this message as Victor wanted to say Hello to all. He is not on his computer much anymore, but whenever he is, this forum is the first place he visits.

Many of our senior members will remember Victor, who is a long-time member, all the way back to the mid-90s. However, some of the newer members from 2010 and on, might not know of him, except maybe his great books.

At 93 years young, Victor is doing well, and regrets his recent decision not to drive his car any longer. Also, like my own aging complaints at 72, he too has been having some minor memory issues, you know, the typical signs of aging we can’t run from. But, having said that, Victor is hanging in there strong. He still lives in his home in Santa Monica for well over 65 years. Actually since the days when employed as an Engineer with Hughes Aircraft’s Satellite and Space Division, in Culver City CA. An interesting note, Victor and myself, without knowing, must have run across each other in the early 70s, when I was a bit of a “young hot-shot art director” at a large technical publishing firm, also in Culver City. Several times a week I would visit the Hughes’ engineering department picking up classified and secret project materials for technical writing, illustrating and publishing for the Defense Department. Typically while visiting I would be meeting with numerous engineers from various different department - and must have met or come across Victor at sometime.

He is still in love with PT Boats which is clear by his two large published books plus an early self published piece prior to having the Schiffer Publishing handle his main books “American PT Boats, in World War II” and “ American PT Boats in World War II, Vol. 2. When on the computer, he searches for photos of guess what, yeah, PT boats and the likes . . .

Vic asked me to post a question . . .
He had at some point seen a photo of what he believe to be a PT Boat but was surprised to see a fin running along the centerline under the boat. I couldn’t remember seeing any such configuration off-hand, and thought I would share the comment with the board to see if anyone else has come across such a photo and what is was about.

Happy to hear my dear friend is doing well,
Dick . . .

That's awesome Dick, just like the old days when the 3 of you used to get together. Glad he is doing well and you both had a fun time. I would liked to have come over for that.

Good to hear from him, his first book is one of my favorites. Mmmm lychees, a few years ago I moved away from a large tree I had planted in the 80's. I'm going to miss it, they are one of my favorite fruits. Extra clusters of fruit used to go on the top shelf of my closet where they'd dry for later enjoyment. My son would sell any we couldn't use to a local Asian food market, they couldn't get enough!

I've never seen a fin that ran along the keel, just the shorty near the bow. This may be a (poor) photo of one on PT 487 from the movie Giant Killers:
