Scott,
Usually anything described as "caliber" is a bullet, and anything described as "millimeter" is a cannon shell.
PT armaments in the main were .50 caliber machine guns, 20 mm Oerlikon cannons, and 37 mm and 40 mm cannons.
Someone else on the Forum can probably give you a more informed breakdown on calibers and millimeters.

In the Navy, most shipboard weapons are referred to as guns; i.e., 16 inch guns, 5 inch guns, 20mm machine guns. This goes back even to the days of sail when ships were categorized by how many guns they had. Cannons are usually the Army's arena.

In many articles I have read, the larger guns were actually referred to as " rifles". An example the USS Iowa was armed with 9 16" rifles arranged in three triple turrets. A 5" 38 on a ship referred to the ratio between barrel diameter and length, therefore that weapon would have a barrel length of 190 inches.
