Very nice Arjan, and thank you for helping promote PT Boats by bringing them to the public eye! My passion for them began with my R/C boat interest, I had bought a set of hull plans for a large model but life took a turn before I could get started. But to state the obvious I was hooked. Who knows how many future enthusiasts you will reel in by running such beautiful models.

Thanks Jeff, in many ways I'm pretty conservative, e.g. up till now I have refused to buy a mobile phone but I I have benefited greatly from the opportunities internet has provided over the past two decades. It's simply great being able to share interests with like minded people living thousands of miles away..

I'm afraid that there is a rapid decline in the general interest for history and modelling (I'm afraid most of us are old farts ).Still I'm sure interest in PT Boats will remain, after all these are iconic and also aesthetically pleasing craft (especially the Elco boats). I just hope enough modellers remain for companies, such as Italeri, to keep releasing new PT boat kits.

Regards,

Arjan

I've been following these posts with great interest! Yes, indeed the hobby of scale modeling has been decreasing. One of the local scale modeling clubs sponsored a regional IPMS (International Plastic Scale Model Society) convention and contest. I found that our local scale model operational boat club (http://ssmbc-fl.org) members could not enter their models as the IPMS does not allow operating scale models. I negotiated to have at least a display (with included my PT-61 and German Wiesel patrol boats, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzGVZeTV_j8&) which turned out to be a hit at the show. Point is that since the last IPMS show here (2017) there was a big decrease in participants.

Besides my PT-61 gunboat (http://lewsmodelboats.org/PT-Index.htm) another member has the 109. We have two new members that have PT boats as well and should be bringing them to a meet next month. That will be four 1/20 scale PT boat running together. I look forward to that.

As for figures, yes, they do improve the appearance of the boats tremendously. But 1/20 scale figures are hard to find. There are some on Shapeways that are expensive and not really depicting the crews from the south Pacific. I bought Tamiya pit crew figures on Ebay and carved/filled/re-positioned them to man the boat. These have been out of production for a few years but you can still find the (example https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamiya-1-20-pit-crew-tire-change-1-20-Grand-Prix-Collection-20031-/112600559886.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Lew, I love your PT 61 gunboat! I've just discovered your interesting site, some great pics here :

http://www.lewsmodelboats.org/PT-PT-61-finished-photos.htm

I also like your LCM 3, I wonder what setup you used. I have been working on the Trumpeter kit myself and I also have the Italeri one. I plan to use a tank destroyer as a battery box (some tank destroyers were ferried across the Rhine by LCM 3's in 1945).

I know 1/20 is a rather difficult scale for figures. The Shapeways ones in fine detail plastic are indeed way too expensive. I also have a number of the Tamiya racing driver/pit crew figures. I bought them second hand for my Lindberg Constellation but they proved a bit too big for this model. Really convincing conversions of those Tamiya figures !

Arjan

Not a PT boat but a 1/18 scale rc PBR Mk II. I bought one second hand two weeks ago. I'm now working on a crew (not always historically correct I have to admit ).

Nice looking boat Arjan! What kind of drive system does it have?

The bow gunner looks to be a bit overheated being out in the sun like that... I recommend a tactical string bikini Mk 38.

Hi Jeff, I love your sense of humor .

It's an RTR Proboat rc model with water jet propulsion. It works pretty well but I have added a small fin to the keel to improve its steering characteristics. The major disadvantage is that there is no reverse. Reverse buckets for the thrusters are available at Shapeways but then you need an extra servo and a 4 channel transmitter. Also it's a rather small boat (21 inches) and one shouldn't add too much extra weight. I made a video clip which is not terribly good but it does give an impression :

In the mean time I have added a helmsman or rather a head and a torso (to save weight)'

Regards,

Arjan
