Dear Tom, I am also about to build a Ron 34 boat - converted from the Italeri 596 kit. I am interested in how you did the white star on the bow. Happy to swap notes and reference information.

hi ,
Welcome on board.
I found the star in PT boats In Action , they're 2 of them , both a little different.
But that is standard on a PT boat .
I first sprayed the deck it's main color.
I printed out a 5 point star in the right size and cut it out.
I put it on the deck with some small patches of double sided tape.
I used the Tamiya yellow paint tape along the outline of the paper star , when I was satisfied with the result I removed the paper and double-sided tape and made sure there was no glue left behind .
Sprayed the star .
Hopes this helps.
cheers, Tom

Tom;
in case you have never read this, this is the short biography of Ensign William Hamilton Shaw USNR XO of PT 518 RON 35.

Hi Tom, your build is coming along nicely ! I'm curious about your commander figure. Have you converted an Italeri figure ? I started converting some Italeri figures when I was waiting for the PT boat kit to arrive. I exchanged the original Italeri heads for some resin ones (Italeri figures always seem to have rather awful heads ).
Groet,
Arjan

Thanks Arjan,
I only changed the helmet for a officers hat from a miniart figure.

Tom;
When you almost done, you can add this:
The original is part of the RON 35 collection onboard the USS Massachusetts(BB59), at Fall River. The plaque is two tone gray with black outline and shading and white highlights. It is safe to say there was one on each side of the charthouse above the side windows.
The font I used for this was Brush Script MT, it was the closest I could get.
Take care,
TED

Ted,
That is a niche one, thank you very much.
I'm going to make some decals for the name.
Do you know by any chance what length the whip antenna is?
cheers, Tom

That's interesting Ted, I wondered about the objects above the side windows in some pics. Looks like PT 513 also had a name plate in this position :
