Some sad news. Many of you know Chip Marshall, a contributor here on the forum and PT Boat enthusiast, expert and researcher extraordinaire. Particularly the post-WWII boats.

Chip passed away this passed weekend. In fact Ted Walther was talking to him about PT Boats on the phone earlier in the week while he was in the hospital and having a heart attack.

Chip was also a PT Boats Inc. Board of Directors member. He will truly be missed.

This saddens me greatly. The Chip I knew was knowledgeable, good natured, and freely shared his research with us. Rest in peace Chip you will be sorely missed.

Terrible News. Chip and I talked on the phone many times about the PT BOATS. We last met up with each other at the last PT BOAT reunion in Rhode Island. I spoke with his sister this afternoon. We will miss you Chip.

All;
Chip was an irreplaceable "PT Boat" Teammate of ours.

His tireless research efforts on our behalf will never be matched. While he was talking to me on the phone, he told me his recent research bonanza was discovering the current location of the Foreign Liquidation Commission(final disposition/sales of surviving Pacific PT Boats) and the War Shipping Administration(final disposition/sales of US based and Lend-Lease PT Boats) records. He was very excited to dive into these records as soon as possible, and he told me not to worry he would be home in a few days. I didn't think (and I am sure he didn't either) he meant, the home of all Seaborne warriors, Valhalla! I guess they needed some research done.

As Charlie referenced, I talked with him last Thursday, and he called me back on Friday, for all of those that I didn't PM, here is what I wrote:

Gents;
While I was still down in Panama last week, Chip had text me, asking me to call him over the weekend about 3 Packard engines he came across that are currently located in Belgium. Well, I got around to calling him last night, and while I was talking with him about PT boats and the like, I noticed his breathing was quite labored. At one point he asked me to hang on as someone came into the room he was in, and it sort of sound like "Mr Marshall, why are you on the phone"?. I asked if he was O.K. That's when he said to me " Full disclosure Ted, I am in the hospital, I had a loss of breath episode and I had to have the docs take a look at me, they are looking pretty concerned here right now, they just rushed in with a crash cart. I got to go." and he hung up.
This morning I sent him a concerned text message.
Well he just called me back about an hour ago(14:50), and told me the back story.
The person that came into the room was actually a few nurses and a doctor, with all the equipment. Chip was all wired up and the monitors he was connected to, told the doctors he was having a heart attack while he was talking to me on the phone about PT Boats!
Today he said that the doctor read him the riot act, on how he needs to change his lifestyle and the things he needs to do moving forward.
Our phone call ended as the nurses came in and were moving him to another room.
Chip gave me permission to notify you guys, and says not to worry, he will be home in a day or two. I told him I would give him a call then and just to rest up and heal. He never did tell me the name of hospital he was in.
That's all for now.
Take care,
TED

The phrase "sorely missed" is an overused one, but not in Chip's case. His knowledge concerning the boats and his willingness to share his information was truly remarkable. Fair Winds & Following Seas.

It was well said that Chips Research skills was very extensive covering post WW-II Patrol craft. Was especially impressed his knowledge of the Vietnam era PTF's and their repair bases in Da Nang and Subic Bay, a few years ago. Chip had a real enthusiasm and passion for research. Chip will be missed.

R.I.P. Chip Marshall.

I'm not too familiar with Chip's postings or contributions (maybe I just can't connect the name to the posts), but the loss of any of our PT Boat Forum members is just that -- a loss for all of us.

Condolences to his family. The fall holiday season is always a very tough time to lose someone.
