Does anyone on the forum know or can shed light on what this object is on the aft end of the eng. room cover. It appears on several of the earlier boats and can only speculate as to it's function. I first thought it a form of speaker or vent. Help. I'm completing a build and wish to incorporate this on board.

GB;

What scale are you building? This is included in the 1/35th PT 109 from Italeri, part 14D and Part 66E.
Take care,
TED

I think it looks like a cease fire buzzer horn. It signals from the helm to gunners when to stop shooting. I have seen similar horns installed on early Higgins boats and on schematics. They also have a signal for the depth charges. Jerry

A horn looks the part. I'm finishing a 1/16 scale boat. PT-117. I'll post photos soon of the completion. Thanks.

You nailed it Jerry, from Detail Specifications For Building Motor Torpedo Boats, March 1944 (http://archive.hnsa.org/doc/pt/specs/):

1 P. B. for bridge to horn for aft 20 mm. gun cease firing signal, circuit 5U (sec. S71-1).

Circuit 5U-Light projectile machine gun cease firing signal.- This system shall consist of a 24-volt direct current horn similar to Type H5a horn (BuShips Spec. 17S11 (INT)) at the aft 20-mm. gun energized from the bridge. Supply shall be 24-volt direct current. Navigation horn will serve as an audible signal for forward 20-mm. and 50-caliber machine guns. (See sec. S64-1.)

It looks like this Federal Model 35 horn:

Or this Federal Model 42:

WOW! Jeff....you da man. I couldn't have asked for more. No excuse to not get it right now.

BTW, I wanted to thank you for the extensive research and posting of your PT103 site. I have relied heavily on your work and could not have accomplished this build without your efforts. Gene
