Can anyone provide any information on PT-196? I have never seen another boat dressed out like this one.

Is there an extension on the stern?

Any ideas?

Gary - The stern extension was an experimental, additional fuel tank. It was never adopted.....

What about the paint scheme? Is this a predecessor of the "Zebra Stripe?"

I would assume the wavy line scheme was a from of camouflage, but were there any other boats painted loke this?

Several boats, both Higgins and Elco, carried various striped schemes at one time or another. None of them proved to be proved to be very effective.

AHOY THERE GARY-

I HAVE A 1/32 SCALE MODEL OF THE 196 THAT I ADAPTED FROM THE LINDBERG CLASSIC KIT OF THE PT 109.

I HAVE READ SOMEWHERE A WHILE BACK THAT THIS WAS THE LAST OF THE ELCO CLASS PRODUCTION RUN. ELCO WANTED TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE WAY OF ' FACTORY APPLIED CAMOFLADGE ' AND OPTED FOR THE WAVY LINES. THE WAVY LINES WHERE A YELLOWISH GREEN AGAINST OD GREEN. BY THE WAY THERE ARE EIGHT WAVY LINES ON EACH SIDE OF THE HULL. GO AHEAD AND COUNT THEM! ELCO ALSO ADDED A NICE SET OF DENTURES (SHARK'S TEETH) TO THE BOW.

THE VERY FIRST PICTURE OF THE 196 I SAW I FIRST THOUGHT SHE SPORTED ' ZEBRA STRIPE CAMOFLADGE ' LIKE THAT OF THE RON 10 BOATS. DURING MY RESEARCH I FOUND THE SAME PHOTO THAT YOU SHOW OF HER IN THE BAYONNE RIVER, MY OLD HAUNT BACK IN NEW JERSEY. THAT'S THE BAYONNE BRIDGE IN THE BACKGROUND BY THE WAY!

UPON COMPLETION OF HER FANCIFUL CAMO " MEASURE " AN EMPLOYEE AT ELCO QUIPPED, "THAT SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE A DAMN OCTOPUSS!!" SHE WAS GIVEN THE NICK- NAME "ELCOPUSS" BY THE ELCO PLANT.

ON HER ARRIVING IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC HER CREW CHANGED THE NAME TO "THE GREEN DRAGON"!

AS FOR THAT EXTENTION TO THE STERN OF THE 196, IT HAD ME GOING NUTS TOO! I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HECK IT WAS EITHER. A NAVY VET TOLD ME THE SAME THING WILL SAID, IT'S A BLADDER EXTENTION TANK.

She was also, at various times, named PURPLE SHAFT and SHAMROCK.

>>>THE WAVY LINES WHERE A YELLOWISH GREEN AGAINST OD GREEN.<<<

I'm curious as to the source for this statement. David Swasey, a camoufleur at ELCO, described this scheme as follows:"...Back of the face, we finished out the hull in dark and light gray wavey lines - a sort of quiet "Adaptor System"..."

AHOY THERE MR. ROSS-

THE MAGAZINE THAT I RECEIVED THE INFORMATION ON THE WAVY PATERN FOR THE 196 BOAT WAS "FAST BOATS OF WW II". I WISH I STILL HAD THE MAGAGINE. I DO BELIEVE IT WAS A SPECIAL ISSUE FROM SEA CLASSICS MAGAZINE MANY YEARS AGO.

I TAKE YOUR REPLY AS READ FROM THE ' BIBLE '. I AM VERY AWARE OF YOUR RESEARCH AND PLANS SETS AND I HAVE USED THEM ON THE MODELS.

THANK YOU FOR SETTING ME AND EVERYONE ELSE 'STRAIGHT' ABOUT THOSE WAVY LINES!

There is more information on this extension in "American PT Boats in World War II" by Victor Chun. The attachmentwas a ceuising range enhancement fuel tank.It was designed such that the wake of the boat would lift it up and reduce drag.Unfortunately, the tank tended to break lose in high speed turns and was abandoned.
