Squadron one was the first PT BOAT SQUADRON commissioned and was originally made up of experimental boats, but later was made up of 77 foot Elco pt boats and sent to Pearl Harbor. It had action on December 7, 1941. The boats also saw action in Midway and participated in the Aleutian campaign. Squadron 2 tested the first 70 foot Elco boats in Florida and Caribbean waters around 19440 and 1941.
Squadron 2 also served with the Panama Sea Frontier, having no less then 11 brand new Elco 77 foot PT Boats. Sometime in late 1942, six of the boats were shipped to the South Pacific where they were active in the Solomons Islands, fighting the famous Tokyo Express in the defense of Guadalcanal. It is certainly possible that your Dad served with these groups with the big question being, Did he serve on a boat crew. Hard to know as many service records did not mention which boats they were on, only the Squadrons. It is possible he was on a Base Force Crew as well. We can rule out a Tender, because none of the other ships mentioned in his records were in fact Tenders with the MTB's. Remember that cooks did in fact serve on PT Boats and from listening to others they made some of the best shots on the boats. You can call PT Boat headquarters, whose telephone numbers are listed on these pages. Ask for Allison or Alyce Guthrie and they will check their records to see if his name is among those that served on a boat. Good luck and I am sure someone from this mesage board will help you in your quest.............

Ken: In looking through my files, I don't come up with anything on your dad. I DO have half-a-dozen crew photos of Squadron One and Two personnel that are not labeled. If you would like copies, let me know your e-mail address.

Hi Will,
If you have a shot of the crew on PT18, I'd be interested. Dad was the quartermaster on her during the Miami trials.

Hi Al:
I've only got one shot of the 18 boat (which you have undoubtedly seen, but I'll forward it anyway).

USS Jamestown was in fact a PT BOAT TENDER, which I believe was AGP-3. She assisted forming the MTBSTC in 1941. She also escorted supply convoys between New Herbrides and Tulagi and towed barges loaded with gas and bombs. She serviced Ron 3(2) and helped repair cruisers. She was included in the Presidential Unit Citation for taking and holding Tulagi, Gavuta, Tanambogo, Florida, and Guadalcanal. The ship was decommissioned March 6, 1946.
