Here's a picture I found at the Archive of PT 523 racing to return a pilot, Ensign Crandall from VC-80, to the USS Manila Bay off of Leyte Island.

Thank you Charlie, that is a very interesting image. She is armed to the teeth! Is that rectangular structure aft of the 37mm part of a mortar?

It would appear to be the mortar. The baseplate is behind the mortar "frame" (for mounting the mortar), the tube laying across it, and the front legs on the deck behind the tube.

Thanks for posting the 523 photo! Never get tired of seeing it! Too bad the whole boat wasn't photographed. My cousin was the skipper (LT Robert W. Orrell) until the fateful night in Oct 1944 when they were strafed by Jap planes and 8 men killed..
