Hi all,
I wanted to share something that alert PT Boat Forum member, Bill Smallshaw, found and pointed out to me at our last model ship club meeting. Warbirds decals created a general symbols decal sheet for the 1/72 80 ft. Elco. Bill told me that it had markings for PT-157 with the Aces & Eights art work. I had to have it!

The sheet has some decals that perhaps aren't useful for the 80 ft Elco but there is a lot that is. The decals are extremely well printed. So far they are only available on eBay. Just search for "1/72 Elco Decals". They are on sale. As soon as they sell Warbirds puts up another set. If you want multiple sets drop them a line and they will make arrangements for you.

I reached out to them in the process and they are interested in producing another sheet. I sent them a bunch of photos as examples with the following recommendations...

Thanks Bill for making me aware of these markings!

-Plain white small numbers.
-Victory markings consisting of barges, flags, planes, hash marks
- Squadron art work to go on the tubs, spray shields, etc.
- Identification markings
- Nose art

Anyone have any other suggestions? I can pass along any requests or feel free to reach out to Ed at Warbirds Hobbies.

Great stuff, Bill and Dave -- thanks for posting this. Its about time something like this was made available. I ordered one of the sheets today.

Wish the white "Aces N' Eights" script to go under the card suit had been included...I like the red small boat numbers...wish they'd also made some gray ones...always wanted to do a Rendova-era SCR-517A-equipped 159...

I guess one could use the large "PT" and the "7" and "3" numbers for the hull numbers if one wanted to make a "McHale's Navy" TV series boat from the Revell Vosper kit, but the "73" numbers for the charthouse coaming face and sides would have to be tiny...

Hi Drew,
It's very hard to see but the script is there under the cards.

OK Dave, I can see the script now if I squint. Pretty cool -- thanks!

Dave, I re-read your original post, and you asked for suggestions for additional 1/72nd scale PT decals. Here are a few of my ideas, which of course could be done in 1/48th or 1/35th scales for the Merit and the Italeri boats:

- Small (charthouse, starboard turret, port cockpit, 20mm pedestal) black-shaded numbers, but gray instead of white.

- Small straight (block) black numbers.

- Small rounded, unshaded white numbers - like you've got on your 109 model.

- Some of the more unusual or racy charthouse-face paintings and names

I'm sure you've already thought of these, but I thought I'd throw them out there.

Dave;
I agree with Drew's suggestions but ask Warbirds to add 1/35 scale, this way the numbers can also be used with the 78' Higgins model also when it comes out.
Take care,
TED
P.S. Solid white Gothic block numbers also.

Thanks for the feedback gents. Got you covered. I sent them a few photos with "nose art" but none have very good quality. Do you have any that I can send along to them? I'll suggest black numbers as well.

I'll also suggest larger scale, particularly with the 1/35 Higgins boat coming out. It would be helpful to know what Italeri will do. There are some good examples from the Life article and we of course have the boat down in New Orleans.

Dave,

Got these decals today -- they are, as you said, very well printed. Anyone who wants to model the Revell 1/72nd scale 80' Elco kit with any numbers should get one of these sheets. They won't be disappointed. I'm looking forward to any other PT decals Warbirds can come up with.

One question, though. What are the silvery squares on the sheet below the U.S. flags supposed to represent?

And do you know when the new-tool 109 kit will be generally available here in the States, besides the Ebay source?

I told Brandon at Freetime Hobbies about it the other day and he had it on his site in minutes for pre-order. He was totally unaware of it. He has it on the main page banner and if you click on it you can add your name to be notified when he gets it. Right now he’s not sure what the price is going to be.

I did find one on eBay from a German seller for a good price. They quickly sold out. Prices are all over the place on eBay right now. Be careful though, everybody and his brother that has the old kit is trying to dump them.

You can’t go wrong with Brandon. He’ll offer the kit at a fair price and has excellent customer service.
