I have just purchase an inexpensive Revell PT-109 1/72 scale model kit. I built this kit as PT-109 when I was 12 (1972). I am going to use the hull, deck, props, rudders and shafts and build a model of the passenger vessel "Sightseer". The Sightseer was originally PT-486. I know the PT-109 is a different class than the 486, but it will suffice for this build.

I am going to build the 1954 version which is the first without all of the figurines that were added in the '70's since that was the first configuration the vessel had post war.

Since this is my first foray into model building since I was a kid, any suggestions are appreciated.

The model:

The 1979 configuration:

The first issue will be cutting off deck structures and the torpedo tube bases. Afterward, I will need to fill the deck to make all of the deck flush except the opening behind the wheelhouse to head below.

What would be the best way to accomplish this?

The other two items I need are what can be used for the pipe railing and canvas?

One good thing, there are only a few colors needed:

Below water line - red bottom paint
Hull - Precaution Blue
Deck - Slate Blue
Railings and Canopy - Precaution Yellow
Various parts - White

Gerry;
My suggestion is, don't worry about the kit deck, discard it. Use balsa or basswood for the deck and go from there. railings in this scale can be made from aluminum or brass wire. If the original deck hatches were used, cut them from the kit deck and sand them down so the sit at the proper scale height off the wooden deck. Canvas in this scale is duplicated with tissue paper or a non design toilet paper, and Elmer's white glue and a small amount of water to thin it out. Brush it on the "canvas" item and let it dry.
Take care,
TED

The shape of the hull should be the same so you're good to go there. I hope you have fun with your project!

I have been wanting to do this for YEARS. I have searching for tiny sea horses and a figurine of King Neptune as well. Take a picture when done....I think this is great!

The first version I do will be the 1954 original Sightseer without the seahorses. I will do that version later.

I helped Captain Schumann rebuild the main seahorse on the bow in 1982. It was fiberglass and fairly easy to repair. He told me that Captain Stocker's original seahorse head used to swivel left and right.

As far as finding something in 1/72 scale for the seahorses and King Neptune might be tricky.

You may be able to commission somebody to do figure drawings for you and have them 3D printed through Shapeways.
