Well, here's what looks like the prototype of Revell's new tool PT-109 in 1/72 scale to replace that old war horse we've come to know so well. There are some big surprises with this new release... like Chart House and Day Cabin interiors! No photos of engine room I'm afraid.
First impressions are that they got a lot of features about this boat right. What I'm not sure of is the hull shape. It could be photos being photos but I'm curious to see how well the hull holds up to scrutiny. I do hope that they included a mast so that other versions can be built. Interested to hear what you think.
Anyway, for your viewing pleasure courtesy of Revell Germany at the Nuremberg Toy Fair...

Much improved cockpit.

Take note of the throttle cover detail.

Day Cabin
Chart House
Somebody's going to have to explain that big dial on the panel cover.

Hello Dave,
Thanks for posting.
Hope you are well as we haven't spoken for a while.
Interesting, it looks like a mock up with some re-worked parts from the old kit. It doesn't seem to have the finesse that I would have expected from a new tool kit. Looks like the engine hatch is designed to lift off as well as the charthouse and dayroom The shapes look O.K but it is all a little clunky as if it is 1/144 rather than 1/72.
As an aside I am hearing rumours about a 1/35 Higgins from Italeri. and for fans of new tech there is a 1/35 CB90 now from Tiger Model with full interior
Exciting times.
Best Regards,
Stu.

Hi Stu,
Hope all is well with you. Yea, it does look like a mock up but who knows. It looks like it's designed to pull apart. Not sure if there's anything under the engine hatch but that would be welcome. I'm wondering if a crew is included? Time will tell.
I guess the cat's out of the bag on the Italeri Higgins boat. It's posted in their new releases for 2018 and also on Scalemates. It's not a rumor.
The Tiger Models CB-90 release looks exceptional. Modern USN special ops. Got to love it.

Dave;
Yes here it is: http://www.italeri.com/news_scheda.asp?idNews=740
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/1124238-italeri-5622-higgins-78-torpedo-boat
Here is also a 1/72nd scale Higgins I came across: https://www.oldglory25s.com/view_product.php?product=MCL32
This one flew under my radar! The photo of this 1/72nd scale looks a little distorted and its not a good looking model, especially for this price. Glad I made my own 1/72 Higgins (PT 308) 20+ years ago.
Take care,
TED

Thanks for posting the photos, Dave.
After eyeballing the pictures, I agree the model appears to be a mock-up, or a pre-production model. It looks a little rough around the edges, with some rather unrefined, crude, details.
Some observations....
Pro:
-Splash skirt on the aft twin-.50 turret.
-Correctly detailed twin-.50 turret limit rails, guns, etc.
-"Star" bracing ribs on the torpedo tube doors.
-Torpedo tube training gear(s).
-Depth charges and cradles.
-Correct (straight across) top of the port cockpit armor.
-Charthouse side details(lights, vents, step).
-More-detailed twin-.50s and mounts.
-Decals for instrument panel.
-Bracing details inside cockpit bulkhead (starboard) and aft splash shields.
-Correctly-sized "109" decals.
Con:
-Crudely detailed black powder chambers on tubes.
-Crudely-detailed searchlight pintle mount.
-Huge gaps on the lift-off charthouse top.
-Negligible charthouse interior details.
-Crudely-detailed mufflers/operating rods.
-Crudely-detailed deck fittings and bullnose.
As we've speculated, the photos are probably of a pre-production example, so some of the parts would (hopefully) be more detailed or refined on the finished product.
My initial thoughts would be to use some of the good new parts/details on this kit to dress up the classic 1963 model, but we'll see what this new-tool kit really looks like when it comes out.

Yuh, this is a piece of crap. At 1/72 scale, it would be just a hair under 13" x 3 3/8". The cockpit is out of proportion and badly shaped, the torpedoes are too long and too skinny, and the hull just looks wrong.

Greetings guys,
Italeri made the announcement for the Nuremberg Toy Fair which opened this week. I'm very excited about this project. I'm hoping hoping hoping that they can mold that wonderful S shape (b ow to stern) into the hull. I'm sure they'll make a great kit, one I hope Al's dad would be proud of! Certainly better than that 1/72 example!
