James, My father-in-law TPM John E Mirus was in RON5 from Dec 1943 til Jan 45. He was on PT-63 the day of the fire. He trained on 107 when he first arrived in the squadron. Was assigned to 108 just after the fire. He passed about 3 years ago.

What I remember him saying about the fire was:

1- PT-63 was "inboard" which he explained as the dock being parallel to the shore and 63 was closest to shore

2- He was below deck when someone hollered fire. He hit the ladder and went over the side

3- He cut his arms and legs on the Coral bottom. He called this his only injury of the war.

3A - He was picking small pieces of metal out of his arms until the last days of his life - I think he had more injuries than coral cuts.

That is about all I can relate. Like many WW II vets he was very reticent to discuss his service. Give your father best wishes from the Mirus Family.
