Photo 1:PTS PASSNG LEYTE GULF 1944-45. Notice torpedoes are mounted farther apart, more typical of earlier boats.

Photo 2:PT PASSING OUTRIGGER LEYTE GULF 1944-45. Notice the torpedoes are closer together, typical of the later boats.

These photos recently came to my attention. The second was posted by Will it is of a second boat in the same vicinity and suggested that the first photo is a RON 37 Boat and both photos are in the Leyte Gulf area.
Look at the first photo, the 40mm on the stern has a gun shield! It even has the underway crapper set up, hanging off the stern!! When you enlarge the photo it has what looks like a 5 ( It really looks like a 6, but we know thats not right)on the stbd .50 gun turret,
The second photo is same location, but different boat, When I enlarge it, I can't figure out if the 40MM is partially broken down for cleaning or removal, maybe its partially covered, but it doesn't look like the full mount.

Since that looks like a 5 it should be RON 36 or 37(they might also be RON 28 or RON 33, since these too were mixed with earlier and later boats), because later RON's had the standard armament package. I think I read somewhere that RON 36 and "maybe" 37 initially went to the Pacific with 20MM's on the stern, and were converted to 40MM's later??? Could this be an "appropriated" Australian Army 40MM, as installed on RON 21 boats? This might explain the shield, However, I have never seen a 80' ELCO with a shield on stern 40MM.
Any Ideas??
Take care,
TED

There are several shots taken in the same general area; the only really identifiable boat seems to be either the 548 or 549, which would make that Ron 28.

Will;
If you have these other photos in this vicinity, can you post them?
I really like the look of these photos, I am still interested in finding out the identity of this boat with the shielded 40MM.
Take care,
