I ordered two 3D-printed 20mm Oerlikons from Shapeways for my PT 187 in 1/48. Al Ross' lovely BlueJacket Ship Crafters kit includes only one as an early 103 series boat, so I needed two since PT 187 had a bow gun as well as the stern 20mm.

The guns came as a fully-assembled unit, and once again I'm reminded that 3D-printed parts are often not the final answer as a finished part, but rather serve as a basis for further modification and detailing.

In this case I cut them apart, discarded the armor plates, scratch-built the forward pedestal, both cradles and mounts, cut the barrels off and replaced them with brass photoetched kits from RB Model in Poland, cut off and threw away the magazines, and used a lot of brass rod, strip & sheet styrene. I also used some elbow grease and a liberal sprinkling of....um....naval language.

For the modelers among you I submit a before and after shot for your viewing pleasure.

Cheers!

Very nice improvements Bob, especially considering their size! I especially like the actual springs used, what a great touch.

Well Jeff, while I appreciate your comments I'm afraid I have to give you the lion's share of the credit. I'm at the modeling level where....if I can see it....I can make it. But I have to see it first. For those who are wondering where this is going.....Jeff's pt103.com website is the most incredible, informative, detailed, and CAD-illustrated site imaginable. If you haven't been there, especially if you're a model builder, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Jeff is accordingly awarded three gold stars, two "attaboys", and a hearty Navy "Well Done!".

Cheers!

Nice, nice ...too bad 1/48th scale is kids stuff. Time to consider building in appropriate scale like, for example ,1/16th...
Just kidding of course, great job!!

HA HA, Daniele! I'm just now finishing up the PT boat (in the kiddie-sized 1/48), but my next project is a 1/8 scale Fokker Dr.1. Since this is twice the scale of your fantastic PT boat, will it be twice as good?

Cheers!

Bob , classic aircrafts in large scale are rewarding projects, I've been toying with the idea of a 1/9th Albatos D Va for a while...
Maybe when the current project is over...arond 2025 or so...

Hi David,

As I said to Jeff, above, if I can see it, I can make it. But I have to be able to see it first. That's where David Doyle Books comes in......I have no fewer than THREE of your books on PT boats.

Couldn't have done it without you!

Cheers!
