There is a large scale PT 596 model in the World War II Glider & Military Museum in Iron Mountain, Michigan, which may be of some interest to forum members. I would guess it was modified from the Dumas 1/20 PT 109 kit, and while it really isn't up to museum standards, I thought it was interesting nonetheless. Interesting in view of - if it really IS a modification of the Dumas kit - it seems very well done. And ambitious, too.

I shot the photos through a glass case, so they're not of optimum quality, but they're not too bad for an iPhone 5 with an 8-megapixel camera. Hope you all enjoy!

Cheers!

Hi Bob,
Are you sure it is not the italieri model? They released the PT 596 kit before the 109 kit. I know since I built one as well. It ends up being 39 inches long. I think it is 1/32 scale? Just seems curious since this is the exact same number as the kit provided.

Sure looks like the Italeri 1:35 scale boat to me. Stan made one for me several years ago, looks to be the same thing.

Frank & Jerry,

I'm not familiar with the Italeri kit, but you both could easily be right. I didn't feel this was a plastic kit due to the roughness of a number of components, especially the torpedoes. But then again, this could be the paint.

Cheers!

If that's not the 1/35th scale Italeri PT 596 model, it sure is an almost dead-ringer for it...

It is definitely not the Italeri kit.

Looks to have cleaver style propellers also, and they are rotating in the wrong direction. Maybe an old RC boat?

And the rudders are much larger than a scale kits would be.

I am pretty sure that the 596 kit was able to be made into an RC model with only slight modifications to the rudder and prop. But if this is not the Italieri Kit I will be completely surprised. I am looking at the one I built and they are exactly the same in many details! even the number decals are identical, not to mention the rocket launchers, the armament and the wherry placed on top of the day room exactly as the kit directions call for. There are too many identical details for this not to be the italieri kit. David what makes you say that it definitely is NOT? Just curious?

There are some tell tale signs Jerry. I'll point out what immediately pops.

1. The life raft on the Chart House. Way out of scale and much different than the Italeri kit.
2. The cave out under the starboard turret.
3. The cleats.
4. The vents on the foredeck.
5. Here's a big one. The window on the Day Cabin on the forward starboard side on this model is correct. It is incorrect on the Italeri kit.

If this is R/C access is very well hidden but it could be. Nicely done. Whomever built it can be very proud of their work. Very nice model!
